Las Vegas: Medical marijuana dispensary interviews job candidates

The first stocked medical marijuana dispensary in Las Vegas is preparing to open its doors.

Releaf Dispensary on Monday interviewed potential employees. About a thousand people applied for 40 available positions.

Applicant Thomas Orton admitted that he sold illegally for most of his life. Now he wants to do things the right way.

“I’ve been an advocate of its abilities and properties from probably my early 20s,” Orton said.

Orton chose to move with his wife from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas.

“We kind of moved here so I could be here. It’s just that we moved here a year and a half ago and we thought that the process would be pretty close to where it is now,” he said.

Distributing marijuana: Alcohol wholesalers want a piece of the profits

LAS VEGAS (KSNV News3LV) -- Even before customers can buy recreational marijuana in Nevada, alcohol distributors want to get in on the profits.

Alcohol wholesalers want to earn a piece of that pie by distributing the drug. That's why many alcohol wholesalers are backing a 2016 ballot measure to legalize recreational marijuana. If passed, they'd be the middle men between growers and dispensaries.

Irene Lavis wants to see marijuana regulated.

"I think that's an awesome idea. It will keep the crime rates down, if you regulate it you will be able to track where the pot is going," says Lavis.

Nevada State Senator Tick Segerblom supports the measure.

In pain and tired of waiting for legal marijuana

For more than a year, Sheila Gerstenzang has carried the card in her wallet: "Medical Marijuana Patient."

But she's yet to purchase a single bit of marijuana.

After a year of frustration and more than $200 out of her pocket, she gave up and let her card expire in May.

Months of delays in opening the first legal Las Vegas-area dispensary have cost investors money and frustrated advocates. But the effect on patients has been the most cruel.

There are more than 9,300 active marijuana cardholders in Nevada, including almost 6,700 in Clark County. There also are an untold number like Gerstenzang who have given up, at least for now.

Understand the market

Figuring out the demand for product in a particular area determines so much about one's business, according to Kayvan Khalatbari, founding partner at Denver Relief Consulting. Once someone knows how much marijuana they should grow and/or sell, they can establish how much room they will need for their establishment.

Grow4Vets teams up to give free cannabis to veterans

DENVER, CO (KDVR/CNN) - Grow4Vets has been handing out cannabis to military veterans for a year in Colorado.

But the state's medical board has just ruled not to recognize marijuana as a treatment for PTSD.

High There! a cannabis-sharing social network teamed up with Grow4Vets to host an impromptu rally on their Save a Million Vets Tour.

“Now we've created a tour around the country called the Save a Million Vets Tour," Co-founder and CEO of High There! Todd Mitchem said.

Veterans lined up early in Rino's Taxi district, most wearing their colors, letting folks know where they served.

Mitchem came up with the first social sharing network for cannabis users. Now he is partnering with Grow4Vets, helping vets get medication.
