For decades, employers have had zero-tolerance drug policies that included marijuana. It's now a prescribed medication for a number of conditions, so the zero tolerance drug policy on marijuana use needs to be updated.

Medical marijuana must be treated like any other prescription medication. Here are some of the key points for employees and employers to consider:

Canada: Doctors warn against medical marijuana for kids

The group representing Canada's pediatricians is warning parents against using medical marijuana to treat their children's health conditions, saying there is not enough evidence that the drug is either safe or effective.

The Canadian Paediatric Society said in a statement Monday that while cannabis is increasingly being used to treat certain kids' illnesses, "evidence is lacking about the overall effect on children."

Some parents have been turning to cannabis oil and other forms of marijuana to treat conditions that have failed to respond to conventional medicine. Those conditions include epilepsy, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, chronic pain management and even autism.

Dr. Michael Rieder speaks to CTV's Canada AM, Dec. 14, 2015.

Canada: LCBO well suited to sell marijuana when legal, Kathleen Wynne says

Ontario premier says it makes sense to use distribution system province already has in place

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne says it "makes a lot of sense" to use the LCBO to sell marijuana after the federal government legalizes sale of the drug.

"It makes sense to me that the liquor distribution mechanism that we have in place — the LCBO — is very well-suited to putting in place the social responsibility aspects that would need to be in place," she said Monday.

"Obviously, I don't know what the timeline is with the federal government, but it seems to me that using that distribution network of the LCBO … I think that that makes a lot of sense."

Sensation-seeking, reward sensitivity and early cannabis use

Sensation seeking is a personality trait that describes a person's tendency to seek out novel and exciting experiences, and a high level of sensation seeking has been implicated as a risk factor for addiction. According to a report today at the annual meeting of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, in Hollywood, Florida, sensation seeking is related to reward sensitivity, which is a trait that characterizes how rewarding a person finds different experiences. Further, reward sensitivity is itself related to cannabis use, and partially explains the relationship between it and sensation seeking.

Legalized pot not likely to make Canada a haven for addicts and dealers

Three days before Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government delivered its Throne speech - and with it the first formal indication of the Liberals intention to legalize marijuana for recreational use - the Mounties were busting down the doors of three pot shops in Nanaimo, B.C.

RCMP Supt. Mark Fisher said the force was "compelled" to raid the shops after a grandmother complained about her 15-year-old granddaughter allegedly buying weed from an illegal storefront.

One of the stores remains defiant, denying the allegations and reopening the following day.

Trees spokesman Alex Robb said the raids "fly in the face of public opinion, and the stance of our newly elected federal government."

Marijuana dispensary supporters rally in Vernon

VERNON – Supporters of local medical marijuana dispensaries rallied today in Vernon. The show of support was organized after police visited all of the city’s dispensaries.

Elizabeth Bakker was among those who joined the rally appealing to keep Vernon’s dispensaries open for people like her 13 year old daughter.

“This summer we were up to 140 to 170 seizures a day,” she says, with her daughter standing by her side. “[We were] restricted to our house because she could not walk because of how many seizures she was having.”
