Canada’s Prime Minister: Legal Marijuana Is About Health and Safety, Not Money

The new prime minister of Canada, who campaigned on legalizing marijuana, said Thursday that he wants the country to take the time it needs to get the details right and that it’s important for the government make its cannabis policy decisions for the right reasons.

Ending prohibition “was never about a money maker. It was always about public health, public safety,” said Justin Trudeau, who was sworn in as the head of Canada’s federal government last month.

Keep pot out of liquor stores, says cannabis association

Dispensaries, not liquor stores, are the best outlets to sell recreational pot, according to the Canadian Association of Medical Cannabis Dispensaries.

The statement comes shortly after B.C.’s and Ontario’s public service unions called for legalized marijuana to be sold in liquor stores. Vancouver’s Jamie Shaw, president of the CAMCD, said having the two substances under the same roof could be dangerous.

OTTAWA - The prime minister says there's potential for a bit of revenue from legalizing marijuana, but the federal government isn't looking for a financial windfall.

Justin Trudeau says any money that flows to public coffers through taxation of pot should go towards addiction treatment, mental health support and education programs -- not general revenues.

In a roundtable interview with The Canadian Press, Trudeau said that for his party legalization of marijuana has always been about public health and safety, not about making money.

TRUDEAU SAYS REVENUES FROM LEGALIZATION WILL GO TO MENTAL HEALTH

In an interview with the Canadian Press, prime minister Justin Trudeau stated that his government’s goal with legalization of cannabis isn’t tax revenues, but to protect Canadians.

“The big reason that we chose to commit to controlling and regulating marijuana is to keep young people safe,” Trudeau said.

Trudeau cited a 2013 study from UNICEF that listed Canadian youth as having the highest rate of cannabis use compared to any other country in the developed world.
