39% of young adults in Ontario would smoke pot if feds legalized drug: Poll

More young adults in Ontario say they would smoke marijuana if the federal government legalizes the drug, according to a new public opinion poll.

The provincewide survey, released exclusively to the Star by Forum Research, found that 29 per cent of respondents aged 18 to 34 reported using weed in the past year. But 39 per cent of people in the same demographic said they would likely take the drug if it were legal.

Forum president Lorne Bozinoff said the increase was not unexpected, given that young people generally have a more permissive attitude toward pot.

Get pot legalization right: Start by limiting spread of dispensaries

Our new federal government has made it clear that legalized marijuana is just a matter of time. A visitor to Canada would be forgiven for believing legalization has already taken place: Cannabis dispensaries have been popping up across the country, especially in the past few months.

Many of these dispensaries are geared toward providing cannabis to people with a prescription from their doctor. But recent reports from Toronto show that many dispensaries sell cannabis with little more than the customer’s signature on a waiver form. Although illegal, the outlets seem to be operating more openly, presumably on the assumption that if legalization is coming, enforcement will leave them alone. Thus far, with a few exceptions, they seem to be right.

Jacob Securities to shut down

Jacob Securities Inc. is shutting down, making it the second small Canadian broker dealer to announce plans to get out of the business this week alone.

In an interview, founder Sasha Jacob cited the “regulatory burden” and “extraordinary cost structure” of being an Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) member as a major reason for the firm’s struggles.

“Quite frankly the costs of maintaining retail and a trading desk ... have been a bit of a distraction and a drain on the firm” he said.

On Friday, IIROC announced it had suspended Jacob Securities’ IIROC membership which effectively puts the dealer out of business.

Cannabis controversy: Should doctors prescribe it to kids?

The Canadian Pediatric Society released a statement on the therapeutic treatment of children with cannabis this week which reads, in part, "There is little evidence supporting the use of medical cannabis in children and most front-line doctors should not be prescribing the drug to young people." But many parents across Canada say that cannabis has been a huge help to their children - in particular, it's been used to treat children who suffer severe epileptic seizures. Brent spoke to Dr. Michael Rieder, author of the CPS statement, and Mandy McKnight, the mother of a Liam, a 7-year-old boy living with a severe form of epilepsy.

Last summer, Connecticut-based Compass acquired 87 per cent of Manitoba Harvest for $132.5 million.

Both companies are dominant leaders in their respective markets -- Manitoba Harvest in branded hemp foods and HOC in the hemp-ingredient field. Each of them command about 65 per cent of the North American market.

Ontario Wants Marijuana Regulations Guidance From Federal Government

Ontario is looking for federal government guidance on regulating clinics that sell medical marijuana and on how pot should be sold for recreational use once it's legalized.

The federal Liberals promised in this month's throne speech to "legalize, regulate and restrict access to marijuana" to keep it out of the hands of children while also denying criminals the financial profits.

The new government plans to remove possession of small amounts of marijuana from the Criminal Code and create new laws to more severely punish those who provide it to minors or drive while under its influence.
