Rona Ambrose, Leader of Canada's Official Opposition, has turned over a new leaf.

For years, and as recently as a year-end interview with the CBC in December 2015, the interim leaderof the Conservative Party warned Canadians of the dangers surrounding Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's plans to legalize cannabis nationwide:

"It's one thing to decriminalize marijuana. It's another to legalize it in an environment where every day we're receiving more evidence that it's very harmful to young people."

A former elite Canadian diver is facing charges after police pulled him over for speeding but discovered marijuana, shatter and hashish worth more than $100,000 in his car.

Police says Wegadesk Gorup-Paul, 28, was released with a requirement to appear in court March 9 when he will be charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking a controlled substance, which comes with a maximum penalty of life in prison. 

Gorup-Paul competed internationally for Canada for a number of years before quitting diving in 2008.

In a phone interview with CBC News, Gorup-Paul claims he was working for a medical marijuana producer delivering the drugs to medical marijuana outlets on the Lower Mainland.

Two people face multiple charges for drug trafficking and possession after Toronto police raided a Danforth Avenue marijuana cafe and vape lounge.

Christopher and Erin Goodwin, owners of the Good Weeds Vapor Lounge on Danforth near Donlands Avenue, were arrested Thursday evening at the cafe. Their business, one of the first of its kind in Canada, sold marijuana, cannabis resins and extracts, which could be used in vaporizers at the cafe.

The lounge, which opened on Christmas Eve, is part of the Good Weeds chain, which has numerous locations in B.C. and another Toronto location on College Street.

The biggest growers of medical marijuana in Canada want to be first in line when the market for recreational pot opens up, arguing that only they can guarantee a high-quality product that is securely distributed by mail.

The operators of the Canopy Growth Corp. and Tweed Marijuana Inc. want the federal government to shut down the pot dispensaries that are popping up around the country. Mike Dixon and his research team in the University of Guelph's controlled environmental system research facility and program, has received $210,000 from Ontario Centres of Excellence. The money will fund the application of new irrigation technology to medical cannabis growing. It's a process by which small sensors are strapped to the stem of a plant and hooked up to a wireless data logger that measures the water status of the plant every 15 minutes.

The interim leader of the Conservative Party, who as health minister consistently railed against any notion of legalizing marijuana, has had something of a change of heart.

No, Rona Ambrose does not suddenly support legalizing pot. But on Wednesday, in another apparent shift from her predecessor Stephen Harper, the official Opposition leader suggested on a Vancouver radio show that the sooner the new Liberal government takes action, the better off kids will be.

The Liberal government has not yet indicated when, and how, it will make marijuana legal to Canadians but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has asked MP Bill Blair, the former Toronto police chief, to be his point man on the file.
