'Canada's largest' pot vaping lounge opens in Windsor for medical marijuana users

The people behind the new vaping lounge in downtown Windsor say it’s not just about providing a place for medical marijuana users to toke up — it’s about clearing the air when it comes to pot.

“We have medical users who are being discriminated against, who have stigmas lingering over them,” said Jon Liedtke, co-owner of Higher Limits.

“It’s not necessary. Quite frankly, it’s inappropriate in the year 2016 … It’s easy to joke about cannabis. But would you joke about someone who needs to use insulin?”

The 6,000-square-foot lounge — formerly Venue Music Hall — is billed as Windsor’s first cannabis vapour lounge and the largest of its kind in Canada.

If the police want to come in, the doors are open. We’re in no position to stop them.

While Canada waits for legalization, marijuana activists call for moratorium on arrests

The federal Liberals' plan to legalize recreational marijuana is officially underway. Canada’s new minister of Justice, Jody Wilson-Raybould (MP for Vancouver Granville) received instructions to make it happen last November. And on January 8, Prime MinisterJustin Trudeau appointed former Toronto police chief Bill Blair to head those efforts.

But Trudeau has said the process should begin with consultation with the provinces. And so it will likely be several years before legal cannabis is a reality.

Prague: Medical cannabis market shows growing pains

The Czech Republic took a bold step back in 2013 when lawmakers agreed to legalise the sale of medicinal cannabis or marihuana. But the development of this market, which can conceivably challenge that of the established pharmaceutical companies across a wide range of pain killers and treatments, is showing some local and global growing pains.

One of those seeking to develop the market for medical cannabis in the Czech Republic and Europe is Prague-based Sean Carney, actually a former business journalist. He is now working as the director of business development and government for Europe for the Canadian cannabis company Tilray. It has a license to produce, process, and manufacture medicinal cannabis products from the Canadian federal government.

Canada: Unlicensed medical marijuana sellers must still pay tax, appeal court rules

Canadians selling medical marijuana outside the licensed mail-order system must still watch out for the taxman, according to a Federal Court of Appeal ruling that reasserts Ottawa’s right to collect sales taxes on any and all pot that is sold.

In a unanimous decision released Monday, judges dismissed an appeal by Gabriola Island grower Gerry Hedges to stop the clawback of almost $15,000 in GST for marijuana he sold over several years to the Vancouver-based B.C. Compassion Club Society, Canada’s oldest dispensary.

Canada: Medicinal marijuana lounge opens in downtown Windsor

Windsor's first medical marijuana vaping lounge barely had time to open its doors and city officials are talking about finding ways to regulate this type of business.

Higher Limits is already buzzing with customers after opening about a week ago, according to co-owner Jon Liedtke, who says he offers a safe place for medicinal marijuana users to hang out while also eliminating some of the stigma attached to marijuana use.

"We want to bring cannabis out of the closet and put it in the forefront," Liedtke told CBC's Afternoon Drive on Monday. "Right in downtown Windsor is as much of the forefront as we think we can get."

Medical marijuana producer Bedrocan lowers its prices to $5 a gram

TORONTO — Licensed marijuana producer Bedrocan is slashing the price of all six of its medical cannabis strains to $5 a gram, citing a desire to make medicine more affordable for patients.

The company’s products previously cost $7.50 a gram.

Bedrocan Canada Inc. is a subsidiary of Canopy Growth Corp. (TSXV:CGC), a combined company formed when Bedrocan merged with Tweed Marijuana Inc.

Bedrocan president Marc Wayne says the company will still be able to turn a profit, even after price cuts that amount to roughly 33 per cent.

“We’re very good at producing cannabis at a low cost,” said Wayne.
