Manitoba: Medical Marijuana Production Facility Proposed For Morris

File Photo

A developer is looking to setup a medical marijuana production facility in the Town of Morris.

Mayor Gavin van der Linde says the location being discussed used to be an old chicken barn, located in the heavy industrial area.

A conditional use application would need to be approved by the town.

A public hearing was held Thursday night, with about a dozen local residents in attendance expressing varying opinions. Notices were sent to residents living within 100 meters of the proposed site.

Edmonton marijuana grower given nine years for killing co-conspirator

A second man has been sent to prison after killing his co-conspirator in a marijuana operation for spending the drug home’s rent money on a Mexican vacation.

Stanley Vincent James Shawyer, 38, was sentenced to nine years for manslaughter after the May 2012 killing of Phillip Jochen Woehrle. In December, 38-year-old Thaven Philipp Gardiner received the same sentence for the same crime.

Woehrle, 28, was killed by a single gunshot. His body was later discovered in the burning drug home at 129th Street and 117th Avenue.

“Mr. Woehrle died in a cruel and frightening way,” said Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Adam Germain. “He was shot in the back with a .40-calibre handgun. He is more than just a name on the indictment.”

Canada's Potential Pot Czar: Bill Blair?

The Canadian marijuana industry can be an ironic landscape where different names edge in from the perimeter. This month irony raised the bar a little bit higher, yet again, when Justin Trudeau announced his choice for Federal Pot Czar: MP Bill Blair. Toronto's former Chief of Police is the name raising eyebrows and turning heads.

Canada’s pot industry calling on Ottawa to stop rise of illegal stores

A trade group representing most of Canada’s licensed marijuana growers is calling on the federal government to curb the ongoing surge in illegal pot shops, which began in Vancouver and has now spread to Toronto.

Reacting to news that Canada’s largest city now has 40 dispensaries and could see more than 100 by this spring, the Canadian Medical Cannabis Industry Association is asking Ottawa to stop the rise of illegal marijuana stores, which operate outside the strict regulations that its commercial-scale producers must respect.

Marijuana tax revenue paying for sidewalks, schools in Colorado. Why not here?

The gym rats who join the still-under-construction recreation centre in central Denver, Colo., will owe their workouts to weed smokers.

In Pueblo County, south of Denver, students will soon be able to walk to school on a sidewalk paid for by marijuana tax revenue, or apply to the world's first cannabis-funded scholarship program.

"We're taking dollars that were previously going to drug cartels in Mexico and using them to provide opportunity and education to the next generation," says Pueblo County Commissioner Sal Pace. Elected officials there recently approved the use of $2.5 million U.S. in pot taxes to fund a mix of community projects.
