‘Stoner sloth’ anti-drug campaign gets reality check as medical experts walk away

‘Stoner sloth’ anti-drug campaign gets reality check as medical experts walk away

A leading drug research centre has distanced itself from the NSW government’s bizarre “stoner sloth” campaign, which attempts to warn teenagers against the dangers of sustained marijuana use by depicting them as disturbingly oversized versions of the South American mammal.

In a pyrrhic victory for the NSW government, the stoner sloth campaign has gone viral but the anti-drug message appears to have lost out to the internet’s dual love of mocking failed ad campaigns, and sloths.

Cannabis can affect the digestive system in both positive and negative ways

The endocannabinoid system is fundamentally important to the regulation of digestive processes including appetite, salivation, hunger, and satiety. Cannabinoid receptors are widely distributed throughout the digestive system, as well as in the brain regions considered to be crucial to the gut-brain axis.

The truth about cannabis and your white matter

Recently, a study published by King’s College, London caused a media frenzy as it associated heavy use of potent cannabis with structural changes to the brain, most notably a decline in the quantity and integrity of the white matter.

As is so often the case with such studies, certain media outlets immediately leapt to wild  assumptions that cannabis was to blame for this perceived difference in brain structure, and that policy changes needed to be immediately made to reflect this. But is this truly the case?

Again, as so often occurs with these studies, when we look a little deeper into what is said in the text, we find that there is a lot more to the story than these simplistic media articles would have you believe.

Illinois' medical cannabis pilot program in trouble because of low patient numbers

A shortage of doctors willing to sign medical marijuana cards has put the program in trouble in Illinois, barely before it gets off the ground.

Only 3,600 patients statewide have obtained them, according to David Friedman, who heads a firm that invests in and reports on the medical cannabis industry. Friedman had predicted that Illinois would have 30,000 patients with medical marijuana cards by now, and that 70,000 would have them by the end of 2017.

"By any stretch of the imagination we are well under those estimates," said Friedman, who heads up MJIC Inc. in Chicago. "Even with 30,000 or 70,000 patients, we're going to struggle to break even" before the pilot program ends.

Terminally Ill NH Woman Picks Up Medical Marijuana in Maine

PORTLAND, Maine — A terminally ill New Hampshire woman who won a court's permission to get a medical marijuana card received her medication in Maine Friday.

New Hampshire passed a law that allows patients with certain conditions to use medical marijuana, but no dispensaries have opened yet. Supporters of medical marijuana say the case is an important step toward increasing access and giving terminal patients more options for end of life care.

Linda Horan, 64, was beaming Friday afternoon at the Wellness Connection of Maine's Portland dispensary. She had just picked up some cannabis tinctures, capsules and cookies to help treat symptoms associated with her lung cancer.

"My god, I'm over the moon," she says. "Completely over the moon."

Maine: Policy For Medical Marijuana In School Initialed

AUBURN — The School Committee approved the first reading of a new policy Wednesday night that would allow students to have medical marijuana administered in school under a physician's orders and under certain conditions.

Any medical marijuana would have to be approved by a physician, and it would have to be administered in school by a parent or guardian, Assistant Superintendent Michelle McClellan said. Because medical marijuana is allowed under a certificate from a physician but not a prescription, nurses may not administer the drug.

Marijuana doses would have to be in a nonsmoking form, such as being edible.
