Outspoken celebrity activist Woody Harrelson is putting his money where his marijuana is. On Feb 5, 2016, the Hawaii Department of Health posted its list of 66 applicants hoping to open the Aloha State's first dispensaries - including the "Cheers" and "True Detective" star.

Woody Harrelson has been an outspoken marijuana legalization activist for years and now he is putting his money where his mouth is and applying to open up a dispensary in Hawaii. The world-renowned actor was one of nearly 60 some people to apply for the chance to open one of the first dispensaries in the state.

Media caught word of Harrelson’s potential investment when the Hawaii Department of Health published a list of 66 names on Friday, of people who applied to open a dispensary on the island. In April, the health department will announce which applicants will be awarded a permit.

HONOLULU — Actor and marijuana advocate Woody Harrelson was one of nearly 60 applicants to apply to open one of Hawaii's first medical marijuana dispensaries.

Harrelson, 54, applied for a license in Honolulu County under his company, Simple Organic Living.

The Hawaii Department of Health posted the list of 66 applications on its website Friday. The state is now reviewing applications for dispensary permits, which they will award in April.

In a few months, the state Department of Health will select the state’s first licensees for medical marijuana dispensaries. The application process closed just Friday.

On Saturday, hundreds of people stopped by the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall for this year’s Hawaii Cannabis Expo being held over the weekend.

Some attendees told KHON2 they wanted to learn how they can get medical marijuana cards, and be more educated on cannabis overall.

“I was actually looking for a doctor to get a card,” said Jeanette Mahi of Kapolei. “I’m just kind of looking around. I get migraines and marijuana helps me.”

What led a former Honolulu mayor and city prosecuting attorney to enter Hawaii’s burgeoning medical marijuana industry?

“It's odd for me to be a believer in [marijuana] because of my law enforcement background,” admits Peter Carlisle, just seconds after sitting down for an interview at PBN’s office. “I originally approached it with that attitude, but it doesn't take long to immediately understand that this has very significant ramifications for a whole variety of ailments as well as helping people with pain.”

This year marijuana will be sold legally in Hawaii at more than a dozen locations statewide. One applicant vying for one of just eight licenses is the head of a cell phone company and is no stranger to running a business. However, medical marijuana is an uncharted territory in Hawaii, and getting started in that business won't be cheap.

The Hawaii State Department of Health's Office of Health Care Assurance awarded the state tracking contract for $159,000 to BioTrackTHC on Dec. 28. The company offers a government software solution for the tracking of the production, transportation and sale of medical marijuana. Hawaii is preparing to open its first medical marijuana retail dispensaries this summer, 15 years after the drug was made legal.

On Jan. 4, 2016, eight new medical marijuana licenses for vendors will be announced.

This follows the state's new interim rules regulating future medical marijuana dispensaries to be built, which were released on Dec. 15. In 2000, Hawai‘i legalized medical marijuana, and patients were allowed to grow their own plants. At that time, medical dispensaries were not permitted. The eight new dispensaries will change these rules.
