CBD has already been shown to have an antipsychotic effect in humans, but how and why has remained unclear. But if results of a new study on the therapeutic effects of cannabidiol on psychosis is able to be replicated, it could have extremely important implications in the area of psychiatric treatments.

Brain activity 'dampened' by vaped THC, similar to those with schizophrenia: study

A new study by Ontario researchers suggests that brain activity in rats exposed a single time to THC — the vapourized psychoactive component of marijuana — is similar to those with schizophrenia and cannabis-induced psychosis.

Lead author Jibran Khokhar, an assistant professor of neuroscience at the University of Guelph, said the rats' "dampened" brain activity lasted at least one week after the exposure.

"It was really surprising," he said.

Khokhar and his team are trying to tease out the long-known relationship between marijuana use and schizophrenia.

Cannabis use may be linked to higher levels of protein associated with stress, anxiety

New research points to a possible link between cannabis use and higher levels of stress and anxiety, conditions people often treat precisely with marijuana, as well as inflammation.

“Higher levels of this protein were linked with stress and anxiety and also with higher levels of an inflammatory marker in the blood of cannabis users,” the researchers said.
