Positive CBD clinical results contributing to legislation change

CBD is having prominent impact on global markets and regulation, as regulators move to use it as an alternative to traditionally prescribed medications.

Canada made headlines in 2018 after it became the second country in the world to completely legalise adult cannabis use. The country’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was a strong advocate for legalisation and ultimately, the country decided to pass new legislation and initiate legal adult-use in late 2018. As more CBD clinical results come out, they are having an impact on regulation around cannabis.

The science behind marijuana and migraines

There is nothing quite like a migraine. The American Migraine Foundation (AMF) estimates that over 1 billion individuals worldwide suffer from the debilitating pain of migraines. With 1 in 5 women, 1 in 16 men, and 1 in 11 children all dealing with the life-changing effects of migraines, it’s no wonder CBD and marijuana are often brought up as a means of therapy.

Binge drinkers could be protected from liver problems by cannabis

For many people, drinking and drug use go together. And contrary to popular belief, that might be a good thing.

Researchers at the National Institute of Scientific Research at Canada’s University of Quebec have produced some interesting figures on the number of cannabis users who are affected by alcohol-related diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer.

Heavy drinkers who never touched cannabis had a 90% chance of developing liver problems later in life.

But heavy drinkers who were also moderate cannabis smokers, the study found, only had about an 8% chance.

Even more dramatically, for heavy drinkers who were also big-time pot smokers the likelihood of liver trouble went down to about 1.4%.

Could CBD treat dog cancer? Ontario vet college to study cannabis and canines

An Ontario university is set to undertake a three-year study in treating dog cancer with cannabis.

The University of Guelph’s Ontario Veterinary College said in a news release Tuesday that the research could “help point the way to alternative pet therapies.” The study will focus on the efficacy of cannabidiol (CBD), a cannabis compound, in treating bladder cancer in canines, with particular focus on a common and “hard-to-treat” form known as urothelial carcinoma

Pot edibles will soon be legal to buy in Canada, but this woman will still make her own. Here's why.

Patsy Copus makes batches of pot-infused gummy bears or cannabis-coated chocolate strawberries every few weeks to help with her arthritis and other medical conditions.

Although cannabis edibles are expected to be sold legally in stores in December, the Windsor, Ont., resident said buying them will likely be a financial struggle.

Health Canada has capped the amount of the psychoactive compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) allowed in food and drinks to 10 milligrams — a restriction Copus said wouldn't meet the needs of some users.

"So for a person who has to take more of a higher dosage, that would be so expensive for them. They couldn't even afford it," said Copus, explaining cost is one of the reasons she makes her own edibles.

Proposed B.C. Cancer cannabis trial beset by delays

B.C. Cancer is still awaiting approval for a national clinical trial that aims to find out if cannabis extracts offer symptom relief.

It’s been 10 months since B.C. Cancer announced the trial to explore whether cannabis properties reduce cancer-related symptoms including pain, sleep disturbance, anxiety and nausea. But regulatory and other issues have stalled it.

Recruiting of 150 patients in Vancouver, Abbotsford, Prince George, Victoria, Calgary, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Kingston, and Toronto for the 48-day trial is expected to begin, “in the best-case scenario,” by the end of the year.

The truth is, lots of athletes turn to weed to calm their nerves while taking to the field

Anxiety is something every athlete, at every level, faces not only before competition, but sometimes just to get out the door.

Professional and amateurs alike suffer from nerves and, in the case of Percy Harvin, who played wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks and won a Super Bowl, this left him breathless before taking the field. Harvin told the Bleacher Report he had seven prescriptions to calm his anxiety. Marijuana was the only thing that worked.

Marijuana’s effect on sore, aching muscles

The cannabinoids in marijuana not only assist in blocking nerve pain, but they limit the side effects of typical prescription drugs.

Whether it’s after a long workout or a moving injury, soreness and stiffness can complicate anyone’s life, but they don’t have to. With the rise of opioid addiction, is it possible that marijuana and CBD can alleviate some of the symptoms of sports and back injuries?

Ontario moves to ban advertisements for vaping products in convenience stores

In an attempt to deter youth from vaping following growing health concerns, the Ontario government has decided to enforce a ban on the promotion of vapor products in convenience stores and gas stations.

The announcement was made Friday that the ban will officially take effect on January 1, 2020 and that ads for vape products will only be allowed in specialty shops where patrons must be at least 19 to enter.

“Restricting the promotion of vapour products will help prevent youth from being exposed and influenced by promotion in retail settings,” Health Minister Christine Elliott said in a news release.

The announcement comes after multiple consultations following research that states an increasing number of youth are using vape products.
