"Your dog is positive for THC, and she's really high right now."

That's something Jennifer Wright never expected to hear from the on-call veterinarian at the Animal Hospital of Cambridge.

Coco, the Wright family's nine-month-old Yorkie-Havanese cross, had been acting out of sorts that evening. 

"She was really lethargic, she picked her head up and it was wobbling," Wright said. "So I picked her up and I tried to set her down on the ground, and that's when I noticed ... her back end was sort of swaying back and forth. She looked like she was going to fall over, and she could not walk, she would not walk."

The family piled into the car and franticly tried to find a clinic that was open in the off-hours.

The cannabis space is getting interesting again ahead of the legalization of edibles and other peripheral products this fall. With Aphria rocketing on an encouraging quarterly win (and creating a much-needed tailwind for other marijuana stocks in its wake), investors are eyeing the hegemony of the fledgling sector with their appetite for risk and upside renewed.

However, one stock in particular has been grabbing the attention of pot stock believers.

The MGC Pharmaceuticals Ltd (ASX: MXC) share price could be on the move today after the cannabis company released a late announcement on Thursday.

What did MGC Pharmaceuticals announce?

On Thursday MGC Pharmaceuticals provided an update on the planned construction of its Malta-based state-of-the-art Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) production and research facility.

According to the release, the company has signed a long-term lease agreement on a 6,000m2 site in Malta, which was previously identified and designated to MGC Pharma by Malta Industrial Parks.

Spectrum Therapeutics, the medical division of Canopy Growth Corporation ("Canopy Growth") (TSX: WEED)(NYSE: CGC) today announced that it has entered into a five year service agreement with Medical Pharmacies Group Limited ("Medical Pharmacies"), Canada's largest specialty pharmacy that services residents in long-term care, retirement homes and other settings. Under the agreement, Spectrum Therapeutics will be the preferred medical cannabis education partner to Medical Pharmacies and the seniors it serves in over 500 residences and care facilities.

Some industry experts, however, say that medical cannabis is going to be much more lucrative globally. During a panel presentation last week, investors got the chance to learn from cannabis expert Charles Taerk about the best moves to make in marijuana.

Taerk, who is president and CEO of Faircourt Asset Management, said that medical cannabis is where the most impressive opportunities are going to develop in the next few years as the industry stabilizes.

Faircourt Asset Management is a sub-advisor to Ninepoint Partners, a Toronto-based investment manager. Faircourt has its hand in the metals sector, North American equities and, more recently, the cannabis space through the Ninepoint Alternative Health Fund.

The Glasgow-based company produces test kits that test foodstuffs such as milk, spices, cereals and animal feed for toxins, including mycotoxins, microorganisms and GMOs. Recently developed methods have been applied to plant products such as herbal medicines, which have structural similarities to cannabis.

Claire Milligan, product manager at R-Biopharm Rhône, said: "Just like any other ingestible item, strict consumer protection legislation requires that cannabis products, including oils, cookies and cannabis plants themselves, should be tested for the presence of dangerous toxins.

People can treat chronic pain using a number of different medications. However, doctors commonly prescribe opioids for pain that is constant.

Opioids work by attaching themselves to nerve cell receptors in various parts of the body, blocking pain signals that are traveling to the brain.

Although effective, the downside of opioids is the risk of addiction — especially when a person takes them for an extended period.

Although the lives of patients dealing with a traumatic brain injury have improved manifold in recent years, they find themselves vulnerable to a host of side-effects that come with the modern-day medicine such as opioid painkillers, antidepressants, mood stabilizers and anti-seizure medicines.

The good news, however, is that we can now make use of legal cannabis to treat a traumatic brain injury, without the fear of death and other side-effects (recall, marijuana consumption has never resulted in a single death thus far).
