7 incredible benefits of THC

Though best known for its elevating properties, THC is medicinal at its core. Even in small doses, THC has been shown time and again to alleviate the symptoms of many ailments.

More than 30 U.S. states now have some sort of broad medical marijuana law that permits adults, and sometimes children, to utilize the multipurpose cannabis plant. That means that despite its Schedule I standing, which allows for no medical usages, people have made up their own minds, used their own eyes, ears and hearts to make decisions about their health.

Tilray supports first human study evaluating cannabis to tackle side-effect caused by breast cancer treatment

A new study is testing for the first time the ability of cannabis to eliminate a major side-effect of breast cancer treatment.

The Nanaimo-based Tilray, Inc., said it has successfully imported medical cannabis into the U.S. for use in a clinical trial aimed at providing relief to people suffering from taxane-induced peripheral neuropathy.

TIPN, a condition that affects more than 67 per cent of women who go undergo chemotherapy, is a progressive condition that can cause pain and numbness in the hands and feet. It often forces doctors to stop the breast cancer treatment early, leading to less effective results. Although there is currently no effective treatment for the condition, use of cannabis has shown promise in tests on mice.

Patients ditch their traditional medication in favour of cannabis

New data suggests many patients are ditching traditional medication prescriptions such as pain killers and switching to medical cannabis instead.

Prescription drugs range from depressants and opioids to stimulants and are generally known to be highly addictive and capable of causing severe harm to the heart, brain, and liver with repeated use. Consequently, if patients abuse prescription drugs, it can ultimately prove to be life-threatening.

For Canadian seniors, one year of legal cannabis has been a game-changer

When a jurisdiction transitions from medicinal-use-only to full cannabis legalization, it impacts older adults in different ways. In California, for example, full legalization has blurred the distinction between medicinal and adult use, as seniors frequently bypass the medical registration route entirely, and simply purchase their medicine in the state’s full service dispensaries. In the case of Canada, however, which went fully legal one year ago, the change has been both substantive and substantial.

Pot use admission at U.S. border snagging Canadian boomers, says lawyer

Canadians wanting to cross the U.S. border are being asked different marijuana questions than they were before cannabis was legal, says an American immigration lawyer who represents numerous aging baby boomers denied entry to America for past pot use.

Recreational marijuana will have been legal for a year on Thursday, but any celebrating still stops at the U.S. border, said Len Saunders, a Canadian-born lawyer based in Blaine, Wash.

“They are not asking questions of recent use because they know they can’t deny the person because it’s legal in Canada,” he said. Instead, he said they’re asking Canadians if they have ever smoked marijuana and that’s what’s been keeping him busy.

Medical cannabis belongs in pharmacies, says Arthritis Society

Canada's Arthritis Society is taking advantage of the federal election to lobby the federal parties to change some of the ways medical marijuana is handled.

They're asking the parties to commit to lift the $1 a gram federal excise tax, and have medical cannabis dispensed only at pharmacies.

"Just like other prescription medications," said Jone Mitchell, the society's executive director for Atlantic Canada.

"That will ensure that patients receive reliable education from trained health care professionals on the safe and effective use. And they also have an understanding of the other medications their patients may be taking."

A year after legalization, some Atlantic Canadians struggle for access to medical cannabis

Lindsay laid on the couch at her Nova Scotia home, hours after receiving her monthly cancer treatment, and waited for the side effects to kick in.

Aches, pains, upset stomach, nausea and cramps are just some of her symptoms from the hormone suppressant.

Normally Lindsay, who asked to be identified by only her first name for legal purposes, would place a drop of cannabis oil under her tongue and go about her day.

But Lindsay has been left to find her own supply or suffer through the pain after CannTrust, her medical cannabis provider, placed a voluntary hold on its products in early July while undergoing a review by Health Canada. On Sept. 17, Health Canada suspended CannTrust’s licence.
