Land of Milk and Cannabis

When Yossi Feuchtwanger, 68, needs to refill the medication that controls his severe neurological pain, he heads to the Tel Aviv-based medical marijuana distribution center run by Tikun Olam, the Israeli company that produces and sells several strains of medical cannabis.

“I smoke it, and after just two inhalations I’m in much less pain,” Feuchtwanger said as he sat in the waiting room of Tikun Olam’s nurses’ clinic where he and many of the 25,000 Israelis who hold permits to use medical cannabis come for evaluations.

Feuchtwanger, who was able to put away his crutches soon after he began taking medical cannabis more than a year ago, experienced an unexpected side benefit.

Using Pot While Pregnant Not Tied to Birth Risks

Smoking marijuana during pregnancy doesn't appear to increase the risk of preterm birth or other harmful birth outcomes, a new review study suggests.

The researchers did initially find a link between smoking marijuana during pregnancy and an increased risk of having a preterm or low-birth-weight baby. But when they took into account whether the pregnant women also smoked tobacco in addition to marijuana, this increase in risk went away.

In other words, the risk of having either a preterm birth or a baby with a low birth weight was due to tobacco smoking, and marijuana use by itself was not linked to these outcomes, the researchers said.

Painkiller maker spends $500,000 to keep marijuana illegal in Arizona

A Chandler firm that could lose business from legalized marijuana is now the largest contributor to a campaign to stop that from happening here.

Reports filed with the Secretary of State’s Office show Insys Therapeutics, whose sole product is an opiate spray to treat pain for cancer patients, gave $500,000 to Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy. That is nearly four times more than the second largest donation of $110,000 from the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry to try to defeat Proposition 205.

J.P. Holyoak who chairs the committee pushing the initiative, said the interest of pharmaceutical companies in keeping marijuana illegal comes down to protection of profits. He said firms don’t want the competition.

The American Legion pushes to ease marijuana restictions to treat PTSD

Faced with stark numbers of brain trauma and psychological distress cases among combat veterans, the nation’s largest active veteran’s organization has thrown its weight behind the growing movement to push for relaxing federal restrictions on marijuana.

The American Legion, the nation’s largest wartime veterans organization, took a position on medical marijuana for the first time last week. At its national convention, it passed a resolution calling on Congress to amend its laws to “at a minimum ... recognize cannabis as a drug with potential medical value”.

Is Cannabis Addictive?

If there’s a question that can’t be answered with a straightforward yes or no, it’s this: is cannabis addictive?

Before joining Leafly, I wrote for a website that connected people with addiction treatment, and shortly before that I began using medical marijuana. It was a constant challenge finding harmony between my close relationship with cannabis and the struggles of our readers, many of whom were diagnosed with a thing called “cannabis use disorder.” How could I bring myself to write about the risks of cannabis when I used it on a daily basis for my own health, and what negative consequences would my words bring to the legalization movement I was passionate about?

Doctors say pot-smoking should be banned for Canadians under 21

Canada’s doctors are calling for strict limits on legalized pot smoking, saying the minimum age should be 21. And amounts and potency of products sold to those under 25 should be tightly controlled, the Star has learned.

In a brief for a federal task force studying the legalization of marijuana, the Canadian Medical Association does not support or oppose legalization, but makes a range of go-slow recommendations. It urges more money be spent on research, medical and social services for addictions treatment, a ban on home cultivation, a ban on smoking non-medical marijuana in public places, and pilot projects before a full national rollout of legalized marijuana.

Several of its concerns will find high-profile support from Canada’s police chiefs.

Bills OT Seantrel Henderson appealing suspension, citing marijuana use for Crohn's disease

Having spent the past four months showing he’s capable of keeping the effects of Crohn’s disease in check, Bills offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson faces yet another hurdle in attempting to resume his career.

Henderson is appealing the NFL’s four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy after testing positive for marijuana, a person with direct knowledge of the situation confirmed to The Associated Press on Wednesday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the suspension is being appealed and the NFL has not announced its ruling.

Ohio's medical marijuana law takes effect today, but questions remain

Ohio has yet to outline how exactly its new medical marijuana law will work even as it is set to take effect Thursday, leaving a host of unanswered questions by doctors, patients, pharmacists, police and many others.

Rules for producing, prescribing and distributing cannabis to eligible patients are expected to take up to a year to craft.

Ohio is the 25th state to legalize medical marijuana. Its law was fast-tracked by a Republican-controlled Legislature after it appeared all but inevitable voters would do it if lawmakers didn’t.

The narrow law has an implementation schedule that’s slower than in some other states.

How soon real access comes, remains to be seen. The program isn’t required to be fully operational until September 2018.
