Can small businesses really cash in on the legal pot boom?

When Washington state legalized recreational marijuana, libertarian James Lathrop saw running a dispensary as something of a political duty. Indeed, Lathrop, the owner of Cannabis City, Seattle's first legal pot shop, is known for declaring "free the weed" just before opening his doors on July 8, 2014.

Balancing Cannabis Advocacy with Your Business Model

Sincere intentions lead to meaningful industry connections. The cannabis industry serves so many different types of people, it was almost a given that this community would eventually begin to polarize. We are seeing this divide now as more pro-cannabis campaigns ramp up nationwide.

There are some activists who believe that “no regulation is the best regulation,” and likewise there are entrepreneurs who would sacrifice all humanistic elements of this legacy industry in order to turn a profit. Neither are helping the movement, and luckily, both are rare.

When investing in cannabis stocks, investors need to be cautious. Many of these companies offer a product which can be easily replicated by another business. This is not the case for MSRT. The company not only has a first move advantage, but its technology is protected by patents and would be very difficult to replicate.

By taking a look at numerous products that are also considered taboo, for various reasons, perhaps we can better understand the methodology for creating a brand in an industry surrounded by secret.

Not All Cannabis Industry Consultants Are Created Equal

Lately my friend and colleague Kaliko has been attending cannabis events on behalf of The Weed Blog. One thing that he told me he sees more and more at each event is an ever-growing small army of cannabis industry consultants. There are consultants for growing, consultants for dispensaries, and consultants for just about every ancillary niche that there is in the industry. I see the same thing happening on social media, with everyone claiming to be an expert.
