Boulder to take new look at marijuana regulations

Representatives of the marijuana industry, supported by Boulder City Councilman Macon Cowles, want the city to reconsider its approach to marijuana regulation and come in line with the rest of the state, but top city officials say the more stringent approach has resulted in a safer city while still allowing businesses to be competitive.

Two wrong calls on marijuana

There were a couple of decisions on Tuesday involving marijuana. In our view, both were wrong.

The state Supreme Judicial Court ruled that police cannot pull over a vehicle simply because an officer smells burning marijuana, pointing to a 2008 ballot question approved by voters that decriminalized possession of one ounce or less of the drug. The court argued in part that because of the change in the law, the "strong" or "very strong" smell of unburnt marijuana is no longer enough to provide police with probable cause to believe that a criminal amount of the drug is present.

That's true, but that's probably not why an officer would pull over the vehicle. There is still the possibility that the driver may be impaired by the burning marijuana.

The 2015 Cannabis World Congress Was So Square It Was Accidentally an Anti-Drug PSA

Nothing is more suspect than a man in a suit talking about drugs. Unless he's your attorney, he's inevitably police. And even if he's not literal law enforcement, he'd flip in an instant if you got caught with a brick of cocaine, weed, or insider information about Sour Diesel futures.

British envoy suggests industrial hemp for Malawi

British High Commissioner to Malawi, Michael Nevin on Wednesday asked the country to consider production of Indian hemp for commercial production.
In a statement made available to APA, he said local policy makers and the public to consider whether industrial hemp has potential to be a Malawi’s growth crop.

“The hemp being suggested is an industrial variety which is potentially and economically viable not the illegal cannabis or marijuana,” he said.

He said the industrial variety of hemp practically cannot induce the effects seen in the other varieties.

A Wi-Fi-Connected Cannabis Growing Lab for the Geeky Homegrower

There’s a hot new trend amongst young people. No, it isn’t rap music, skateboarding or whipping up hate mobs on Tumblr, or whatever it is that young people do these days – it’s gardening.

Well, maybe, anyway.

The liberalisation of the drugs laws in the States has also provided ample business opportunities for start-ups looking to make some green. Which is perhaps why the Leaf “Plug N Plant” box is now a thing.

Possible censorship of Cannabis Magazine by Mexican authorities

As some already know last May was the first edition of the Mexican Hemp magazine, Cáñamo.

Well, the Ministry of the Interior of Mexico states that it has found several indications of crime in the publication, such as advocacy of marijuana, defending their therapeutic properties, incitement to self-cultivation and others.

As a result of this weight publication is the threat of censorship.

The magazine also has been referred to the prosecution for the crimes committed to assess any criminal acts.

A group of lawyers, senators and defenders of human rights is taking charge of our defense in the silence of the mainstream media.

If you disapprove of the practices to which we are subjected, spread the news and announcements they want to silence.

BC's local governments vote for power over pot shops

VANCOUVER -- Local governments in British Columbia have declared they have the authority to licence medical marijuana dispensaries, defying the federal government's opposition to regulation of the illegal stores.

Delegates at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention voted in favour of a resolution endorsing the position that they have the power to regulate pot dispensaries.

The resolution states that an ongoing court challenge of Ottawa's medical marijuana laws has created uncertainty while pot shops proliferate and cause problems in B.C.

Vancouver Coun. Heather Deal said the vote sends a strong message to the federal government, which has not provided reasonable legal access to medical marijuana despite court rulings requiring them to do so.

Marijuana Business Self-Policing

One of my clients committed an administrative violation last week. It wasn’t on purpose, and it was basically harmless, but their actions violated Washington’s rules for marijuana retailers. They asked me for advice, and I told them the advice I give almost everyone in the same situation — get out in front and self report. I wrote the same thing a year ago.

Oregon seeks members for medical marijuana task force

Oregon needs members for a new short-term task force on medical marijuana.

Following the passage of Senate Bill 844, Oregon authorities have to organize the group quickly so it can report back to the Legislature by Feb. 1. The Cannabis Research Task Force will produce a report on a range of issues, from the latest research on medical marijuana to legal obstacles to proposing a location for a research grow site in the state. The report will also look at the potential for Oregon to collaborate with other states, consider hurdles faced by labs and review boards when it comes to medical marijuana and figure out ways to fund research.

It's time to let Alaska farmers grow industrial hemp

It is hard for me to comprehend that we live in a state where it will soon be legal to cultivate commercial marijuana, but it is still against the law to grow industrial hemp, one of the world’s most versatile and useful crops. Last session I introduced Senate Bill 8 to change that. The bill moved out of the Senate Resources Committee last session, but has yet to be heard in Judiciary. Although the main issue we will be focusing on in the upcoming session is how to deal with the fiscal crisis at hand, it is critical we pass SB 8 before the 29th Legislature comes to an end.
