Colorado law enforcement encourages safe pot use

DENVER (AP) — Breaking from decades of "Just Say No"-type messaging about marijuana use, Colorado law enforcement officials are starting a new campaign designed to promote safe marijuana use.

The revised campaign starts this weekend, when tens of thousands are expected at public rallies and concerts in observation of the 4/20 marijuana holiday. A few things to know about the new effort, along with some backstory:

GOING TO THE SOURCE

The Colorado Department of Transportation is taking its campaign to the demographic most likely to use pot and then drive, according to surveys. That's men aged 21 to 34.

Inside the marijuana farm growing Colorado's most beautiful cannabis

BASALT, Colorado — One cannabis grow in Colorado is setting the bar very high.

Puns aside, marijuana may be legal in the state of Colorado, but that doesn't mean that all plants are grown with equal care.

While visiting the state, we saw cannabis being grown inside dirt-caked retail stores, in warehouse districts tucked into industrial spaces and behind the glass of a medicinal dispensary in downtown Denver. But 30 minutes outside of Aspen, a pristine 25,000 square-foot facility set against a backdrop of blue skies and mountains is leading a push for a classier cannabis cultivation. It's pot gone posh.

Business opportunities abound in medical marijuana — if you can figure out all the laws

The blue states have legalized marijuana for only medical purposes, while the red states have legalized it for both medical and recreational purposes. In all, 23 states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana in some form.

It's been almost 20 years since the first state legalized medical marijuana, but conflicting regulations between the states and the lack of federal direction on its rules and regulations have left the industry fractured and stunted.

Marijuana delivery app Eaze hoping to expand to Vancouver

A San Francisco company is hoping to expand into Vancouver and the rest of Canada to help medical marijuana patients get their medicine more easily.

Eaze is a mobile app that allows people to order cannabis products and have them delivered by drivers in only minutes.

"We are definitely interested in bringing Eaze to Vancouver and Canada overall," said Eaze spokesperson Caroline Vespi in an email. "We don't have a time frame yet."

The company, which partners with dispensaries and recruits drivers to hand-deliver marijuana to patients, says it's asking potential customers to sign up on its website so it can "prioritize expansion based on customer needs."

Ohio questions: Whether to legalize marijuana, and how

Should Ohio make marijuana legal, for recreational as well as medical use? In principle, I’m inclined to believe it should, although I don’t — and won’t — indulge.

Is a proposal that is likely to appear on the statewide ballot this November, after years of other plans that failed to qualify, the best way to prepare Ohio to become the fifth state to legalize marijuana fully? That’s a different question, and one that Ohioans will need to examine carefully before we vote. We’ve got plenty of time to decide.

Will Big Tobacco become Big Marijuana?

DENVER – While federal law makes their entire industry illegal, many marijuana store owners, growers and retailers fear something completely different: Big Tobacco.

Today, most legal recreational marijuana operations are small, limited to a single state and barred from ever getting large by regulators who want to keep a close eye on the fast-growing industry.

But those small operators struggle to get bank loans for expansion, often produce an inconsistent product, and sometimes have no idea how to balance supply and demand for their crops.

NJ marijuana laws called outdated as 4/20 approaches

Stephen Cornell smokes pot twice a day to keep the pain and stiffness in his neck away.

The 45-year-old Smithville resident has been a quadriplegic since he was 6, after he fell trying to jump from one tram car to another outside Atlantic City Race Course. He’s smoked marijuana as medicine — both legally and illegally — since he was 16.

But Cornell is breaking the law.
