LANSING A state panel is expected to decide today if medical marijuana use should be allowed to treat autism.

The panel heard testimony from both sides of the issue a few months ago. Proponents say oil extracted from the plant has been shown to be effective in controlling behavior, while opponents say there is no strong evidence that medical marijuana helps the majority of children with autism.

The Board of Trustees recently received information from Township Attorney Jim Fink describing how neighboring communities regulate and zone provisioning centers, formerly referred to as dispensaries

The issue will either land before the planning commission or come back before the board at a meeting later this summer or fall.

"The discussion was 'Here is where we are. Here are some options to think about. Here's what some other communities have done. That's it so far,'" Fink said.

Panicking people with false fears about the kids is a proven election ploy, but there's a limit to how much guano the voters will accept. The laughably inept Proposal 1 campaign this past spring tried to convince us the lives of children were at stake if we didn't vote yes on the convoluted tax and spending plan, and then racked up one of the biggest rejections of a ballot proposal in state history.

Another tough test of this theory might arrive before the year is out. This time, we'll be asked to protect the kids from pot.

In Michigan, residents are permitted to submit medical conditions to LARA (the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs) in order for the Michigan Medical Marihuana Review Panel to review whether there is ample evidence that cannabis may offer palliative relief in the treatment of that condition. It is the voter’s intent to protect those with debilitating medical conditions that may receive palliative relief from cannabis. When the panel is provided sufficient evidence, it is their mandate to ensure that new medical conditions be added to the list of qualifying conditions for medical cannabis.

CANTON, MI -- In the last week, Detroit-area law enforcement agencies shut down multiple dispensaries.

Raids, seizures and arrests occurred in Shelby Township last week and in Detroit Tuesday.

State Attorney General Bill Schuette's office on Friday authorized felony charges of conspiracy to deliver marijuana and delivery of marijuana against three Ypsilanti resident operating a dispensary in Canton.

That investigation began last September and culminated with execution of multiple search warrants in March. All three people charged pleaded not guilty.

Detroit police arrested two people and confiscated two firearms and drugs during a raid on a marijuana dispensary Tuesday afternoon.

Police seized 4,100 grams of marijuana (about 9 pounds), and removed 12 edible marijuana foods from the shelves at Detroit Medz, said Sgt. Cassandra Lewis of Detroit police Media Relations.

"Our Major Violators Unit executed a search warrant at the location at 4:30 p.m.," Lewis said.

According to state law, only Michiganders who possess state registry cards can legally use medical marijuana, but at the shop "they were just selling to anybody who walked in," she said.

The 43-year-old rapper, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, is an avid marijuana supporter who has been known to light up on stage. He could inspire others to test the legal system in a Capital City run by Virg Bernero, who has become an advocate for legalizing marijuana in the state.
