Michigan rolls out recreational cannabis licences, killing Windsor’s chance at becoming a pot tourist destination

Michigan’s move to issue its first licences to businesses planning to grow and sell recreational cannabis could be the death knell for a small, southern Ontario town’s chance at becoming a pot tourist destination.

Windsor, Ont., is a border town connected to Michigan., the state south of the border that will let the sale of recreational marijuana proceed on Dec. 1.

Windsor Ward 3 Coun. Rino Bortolin told the Windsor Star that Ontario’s slow and “ridiculous” plan to establish brick-and-mortar cannabis shops around the province is to blame.

Wynne says pot not part of Michigan, Ontario memorandum - but they're working on it

Legalized recreational marijuana might be on the ballot in Michigan this fall.

Ontario's premier said the province is working on an 'educational process' for border cities as the federal government is expected to legalize recreational marijuana this year.

Premier Kathleen Wynne met with Michigan Governor Rick Snyder last week to sign a memorandum of understanding related to jobs, tourism and shared resources.

One of the items that came up — but was not part of the document — was how the two governments are handling potential problems surrounding legal marijuana.

"Our officials are working together with border states to make sure that the rules are clear," said Wynne, after signing the memorandum in Detroit.

Cannabis Cup in Michigan a weekend of sights and smells — mostly smells

The tarmac at the Auto City Speedway in Clio might not have ever witnessed such a slow-moving pace as it did on Saturday.

And that smell burning on the racetracks?

Certainly wasn’t gasoline.

It was smoke that filled the air as visitors to the fourth Midwest Cannabis Cup sparked up and sampled different strains of medical marijuana at the dozens of vendor tents, organized by High Times magazine.

Marijuana legalization backers optimistic about putting issue to Michigan voters in 2018

Backers of a marijuana legalization ballot initiative in Michigan say they have the financial and grassroots support necessary to put the question before voters in 2018.

An unsuccessful attempt in 2016 gathered roughly 350,000 signatures but did so outside of the required 180-day timeframe. MILegalize, the group behind the 2016 effort, is now working with the Washington, D.C.-based Marijuana Policy Project as part of a new group, the Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol. They’re hoping to raise millions of dollars to pay signature-gatherers this time around and for what could be an expensive campaign leading up to the 2018 General Election, should the signatures get collected.

Detroit Busts 167 Pot Shops, with More Closures Coming

Detroit's crackdown on illegally operating medical marijuana dispensaries has shuttered 167 shops since the city's regulation efforts began last year, and dozens more are expected.

Detroit city attorney Melvin Butch Hollowell said that 283 dispensaries were identified last year, all of which were operating illegally.

"At the time I sent a letter to each one of them indicating that unless you have a fully licensed facility, you are operating at your own risk," he said.

An additional 51 shops are in the pipeline to be closed in the coming weeks, Hollowell said. That would bring the closures up to 218, a step closer to the  goal laid out by officials to only have 50 dispensaries in the city.

Ohioans Buying Michigan Medical Pot Ahead of Rules Being Set

Ohioans wanting medical marijuana have been crossing the border into Michigan, where some Detroit-area dispensaries will sell to out-of-staters who are issued recommendations for cannabis use months ahead of the drug becoming available in their home state, according to officials from a company providing the recommendations.

Those recommendations, given by doctors working for a Toledo business or any other Ohio physician, won’t necessarily help someone in court if they are busted for having pot into Ohio. Possession of less than 100 grams (about 3.5 ounces) is a minor misdemeanor in Ohio with a maximum $150 fine, but could lead to someone losing their driving privileges for six months.

Here's who will serve on the Michigan medical marijuana board

Five people have been appointed to the state of Michigan's newly created medical marijuana board, Gov. Rick Snyder announced Friday.

The board will be tasked with implementing the system that allows licensing of medical marijuana operations, such as dispensaries, processors, growers and transporters. It will be housed within the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.

License applications for such operations will be available by the end of the year.

"This board will help provide the proper oversight of medical marihuana facilities to keep the public safe by ensuring proper health and safety standards are being met," Snyder said in a statement.
