Canopy Growth Corp. (Tweed) surprises investors with bought deal announcement

Marijuana-producing Canopy Growth Corp. announced on Friday that it has raised $12.5-million in an equity bought deal, led by Dundee Securities Corp.

The stock sale was done at $2.05 a share, a discount of 15.5 per cent compared with where Canopy shares closed on Thursday.

The announcement of a dilutive equity deal was an about-face for the company. In an interview with The Globe and Mail on Tuesday, Canopy chief executive officer Bruce Linton played down any talk of a capital raise being imminent.

“At this time, no,” he said, explaining that Canopy was sufficiently well-capitalized for now, having raised $22-million earlier in the year.

Reasonable Doubt: legal complications stand before Trudeau's plans for marijuana

ICYMI: Trudeau 2.0 swept to power with a new majority government on Monday evening (October 19).

Justin Trudeau made a number of lofty promises that are unprecedented in Canadian politics, should he actually follow through on them. That’s perhaps most evidence in his promises to legalize marijuana and to reform our first-past-the-post electoral system.

Quebec entrepreneur hoping for high times with Liberals' marijuana pledge

Dany Lefebvre has a sleek, modern production facility set up near Drummondville, Que. with a state-of-the art ventilation system, heat lamps and high security.

All he needs now is the green light from the new Liberal government to grow marijuana in it.

"We know they'll have four years," Lefebvre said from the headquarters of Vert Médical in St-Lucien, 130 kilometres east of Montreal.

"In my opinion, it'll definitely be implemented in that time."

Lefebvre is among many entrepreneurs across Canada eagerly awaiting a Liberal proposal to legalize marijuana become reality.

He has close to 40 hectares of land primed for planting hemp.  In addition, he hopes to grow high-quality marijuana in his indoor facility.

Legalizing pot will be a process of trial and error, US expert warns Trudeau

A U.S. expert in marijuana policy has some advice for Justin Trudeau as the prime minister-designate prepares to grapple with the thorny issue of legalizing pot: “You’re not going to get everything right the first time.”

Sam Kamin, the Vicente Sederberg Professor of Marijuana Law and Policy at the University of Denver, said that in Colorado — the first North American jurisdiction to allow recreational cannabis sales —ending the prohibition has been a process of trial and error.

“We’ve been willing to revisit and admit it was imperfect to start, and that is really important for the public to see,” Kamin said.

Legalizing marijuana won't be easy for Trudeau, says Colorado regulator

'And it's going to cost more than you think,' prime minister-designate is told

A Colorado official has some sobering words of advice for prime minister-designate Justin Trudeau if he fulfils his promise to legalize pot in Canada.

"It's going to be a lot harder to implement than you think. It's going to take a lot longer to do it. And it's going to cost more than you think," said Lewis Koski, director of the state's Marijuana Enforcement Division.

Colorado is one of four U.S. states to fully legalize recreational bud. Their challenges — including how to regulate edibles like brownies and cookies and a rise in drug-impaired driving — could be instructive for Canada's incoming prime minister.

Niagara Falls: Medical marijuana at council on Tuesday

Medical marijuana facilities will be the subject of discussion at a public meeting Tuesday night at city hall in Niagara Falls.

The 7 p.m. meeting will be to consider a city initiated amendment to introduce regulations governing the growing, processing, packaging and distribution of medical marijuana.

An earlier public meeting on the issue was held Sept. 15. It was well attended and council members had the opportunity to hear from residents who are either for or against such facilities.

Glenn and Elaine Wilson, who are not able to attend Tuesday's meeting, have submitted a letter to council voicing their objection against the new zoning provisions.

Newsflash: Marijuana Consumers Don't Give Out Infused Halloween Candy To Kids

It’s almost Halloween, so you know what that means – marijuana prohibitionists and some law enforcement agencies are dusting off the ‘marijuana Halloween candy epidemic’ argument again. Make sure to be on the lookout parents, because at any moment your child could come home with an insane amount of marijuana edibles now that marijuana is legal in four states and Washington D.C.. These scare tactics of course are nothing more than an urban legend, similar to the razor blade in the apple (who gives out apples on Halloween anyways?) story.

US official warns Trudeau legalizing marijuana is costly and time-consuming

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Officials in US states that have legalized pot are offering their advice to prime minister designate Justin Trudeau.

Trudeau promised on the campaign trail to legalize, regulate and tax marijuana. One Colorado official warns the process will be more costly and time-consuming than Trudeau thinks.

Lewis Koski of the Colorado Marijuana Enforcement Division says his state has collected $142-million in taxes since storefront sales began in January 2014. But he says a portion of the sales tax earmarked for school construction projects hasn’t yet met a goal of $40-million.

The state has also grappled with two suicides and a murder committed by people who consumed edible pot products such as brownies and cookies.

Young sisters pin health hopes on Victoria cannabis treatment

Two sisters from Australia have come to Canada seeking help for a degenerative lung disease that could quickly prove to be fatal if not treated properly. And they are receiving it in Victoria, thanks to an alternative treatment centre that is supplying the children with cannabis oil.

The concern, however, is what happens when Tabetha, 13, and Georgia-Grace Fulton, 8, return home in a few months.

Prior to their arrival in Victoria this summer, the sisters were being treated in Australia with steroids — drugs whose side-effects, including osteoporosis, have drastically reduced their quality of life, says mother Bobby-Jo Fulton.

U.S. states with legalized marijuana have some advice for Justin Trudeau

VANCOUVER — A Colorado official has some sobering words of advice for Justin Trudeau if he fulfils his promise to legalize pot in Canada.

“It’s going to be a lot harder to implement than you think. It’s going to take a lot longer to do it. And it’s going to cost more than you think,” said Lewis Koski, director of the state’s Marijuana Enforcement Division.

Colorado is one of four U.S. states to fully legalize recreational bud. Their challenges — including how to regulate edibles like brownies and cookies and a rise in drug-impaired driving — could be instructive for Canada’s incoming prime minister.

Among the questions Trudeau’s government could grapple with are whether to allow people to grow pot at home or buy it in stores, and how much sales tax to charge.
