Few Vancouver marijuana dispensaries move on in application process while others ordered closed

Vancouver marijuana dispensaries that did not submit a licence application last summer must close their doors “immediately”, the city has warned, or “be subject to enforcement action”.

“The City inspects these businesses regularly,” states an October 26 media release. “As with other businesses, the City will use a range of enforcement tools, including fines and legal action.”

That was included in an update on a licensing process that the city began last June with the adoption of a new legal framework for marijuana-related businesses.

Canada: The Legalization Debate

The campaign trail saw Justin Trudeau promise to legalize and regulate marijuana.

Now, with a Liberal majority, those in the medicinal pot industry are hoping Tudeau will turn his promise into a reality.

In Vernon, Selen Wong heads the online compassion club The Flower of Life. She's is excited to see what happens and what that will mean for her clients.

“For us, we are going to be able to provide access to legitimate medical cannabis users in a way that is even more safe and regulated than what is currently being provided,” says Wong.

However, for the clients of a downtown Vernon medical marijuana dispensary, there are a number of concerns they would like answered.

Marijuana legalization could draw U.S investment bonanza to Canada

Friendlier laws on medical marijuana use in Canada are already drawing American investment north or the border, and the trend is likely to further ignite if the federal Liberals make good on their promise to allow recreational use of the drug.

Poseidon Asset Management, a San Francisco-based hedge fund focused squarely on the cannabis space, says it is considering boosting its Canadian holdings following Justin Trudeau's election win.

SAM Canada says no to legal pot

The current push to legalize marijuana is wrong-headed and dangerous, says a Canadian group that calls it a "human rights issue."

SAM Canada, the Canadian chapter of Smart Approaches to Marijuana, is looking to push back on the pro-marijuana crowd, founder Pamela McColl told the Sun.

McColl said the legalization, currently in talks, would be normalizing the use of marijuana instead of "dampening" its consumption.

"We consider it to be a public health risk, especially to children ... This is a human rights issue."

She added there hasn't been enough conversation between Canadians on marijuana use. It would have negative effects on productivity, educational system and health, McColl added.
