No More Ready-To-Build Letters: What Does This Mean For MMPR Applicants?

What were Ready to Build letters (“RTBs”)? In a nutshell, they amounted to a conditional MMPR production licence. In an affidavit filed by the government in Allard et al. v. Her Majesty, Health Canada employee Todd Cain explained:

UK: Police tests find nearly half of motorists had drugs in system

NEARLY half of motorists stopped by police since the introduction of new drug laws have tested positive for driving with substances in their system.

Staffordshire Police has used new roadside drug kits to test around 25 people since legislation came in to make it easier to prosecute those driving under the influence.

New powers, introduced in March, mean officers can now test for the presence of cocaine and cannabis at the roadside for the first time.

House rejects proposal to let VA doctors recommend medical marijuana

The House rejected a proposal Thursday to allow doctors at Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals to discuss the use of medical marijuana with patients.

Rep. Earl Blumenauer's (D-Ore.) amendment to the first fiscal 2016 appropriations bill of the year, which funds the VA and military construction projects, failed narrowly by a vote of 210-213.

A total of 35 Republicans voted in favor of the amendment, while eight Democrats voted against it. Boos ensued from the Democratic side of the House chamber when Republicans closed the vote despite the razor-thin margin.

Stores get amnesty period to turn in synthetic marijuana in York

Nine recent, non-fatal overdoses York City Police believe stemmed from people smoking synthetic marijuana prompted the department on Thursday to take a boots-on-the-ground approach to getting the drug off the streets.

Three officers walked into 58 stores in the city, handing out pamphlets about the drug and educating store owners who may not know about the drug's legal status, said York City Detective First Class Andrew Shaffer, who joined the officers.

Shaffer said that all synthetic cannabis is illegal. But that can change when manufacturers of the drug introduce a new chemical.

Inside The $35 Billion Addiction Treatment Industry

The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency estimates that over 23 million Americans (age 12 and older) are addicted to alcohol and other drugs. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), just under 11% (2.5 million) received care at an addiction treatment facility in 2012. SAMHSA also estimates that the market for addiction treatment is about $35 billion per year.

The vast majority of addiction treatment is based either partially or entirely on the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), but is there scientific evidence to support AA as a clinical treatment? Should addiction treatment centers make enormous profits by simply funneling substance abusers into the free fellowship of AA?

Peachland industrial-style marijuana grow ready for first crop

The Interior’s largest medical marijuana grow is about to sprout its first crop. The first crop will be . . . strawberries?

The strawberries will be a test crop to work out the intricacies of the system, which is extensive and expensive beyond the dreamiest visions of Cheech and Chong.

After the strawberry run-through, the farm will produce marijuana for a market of 1,000 people already signed up for delivery of the doctor-prescribed pharmaceutical.

The 12,000 square-foot building at the top of Peachland on Paradise Valley Dr. is in a different league than the usual grow, starting with the security.

Barbed wire, of course. That’s easy.

Depression—Why Cannabis Works

Depression is difficult to treat because it is a symptom of many origins—such as genetics, brain chemistry, daily life, etc.—and as a consequence, requires many different approaches to treat. Treatments from psychiatric analysis to exercise, pills and electro shock therapy have all been tried with varying degrees of success.

Cannabis, anecdotally the best treatment option for most cases of depression, is not recognized by most physicians, but has more recently been recognized by new and exciting research.

Marijuana's magic bean men

The outlaw botanists who designed the marijuana Americans smoke and the money they didn't make doing it

Since almost everyone interviewed for this story is, or has been, a criminal, almost everyone long ago adopted pseudonyms. Some are no longer criminals, so don’t mind their real names being used. Some are no longer criminals, but still prefer to use their pseudonyms.

WA: Did Medical Marijuana Bring About Its Own Demise?

A lack of regulation plus a lack of cohesion was a lethal cocktail for Washington's medical marijuana community.

Back in 2010, a group of medical marijuana patients and growers in Washington state got together and formed a group called the Coalition for Cannabis Standards & Ethics*. Among other things, the group established a code of conduct that all members agreed to follow—akin to best practices lists adopted by more established professions like realty and banking. The members of the coalition agreed to pay taxes, follow disability access laws, and try to maintain good relationships with their neighbors.
