Cyprus: Red tape denies dying cancer patient of medical cannabis relief

A 19-year-old cancer patient made three requests to receive medical cannabis but permission to use the drug was only given by the health minister a few days before he died.

The young man who died last Saturday had supported his requests with medical evidence as well as a doctor’s prescription as he needed the medicine for pain relief while receiving chemotherapy. As the use of medical cannabis is not allowed in Cyprus, he appealed directly to the health minister. The Cyprus Mail asked the health ministry why it took so long to sign the request.

It’s only the first wave of dispensaries to open in Illinois.  State officials expect up to 15 dispensaries will be registered by the end of November 2015, and up to 25 will be registered statewide by the end of the year.

The first dispensary license was issued to a facility in Marion in August.

A dispensary called Nature’s Treatment was under construction near Stern Beverage in Milan, and awaiting approval from the state.

Why and How I Gave Up Everyday Painkillers In Favor of Medical Marijuana

Almost all of us have taken an over the counter (OTC) painkiller. We most likely were given baby aspirin when we were children and probably continued on to specialized extra strength ibuprofen as adults.

OTC drugs seem benign. They don’t require a prescription or a trip to the doctor. They’re readily available at every grocery store, gas station, bodega and pharmacy. They’re cheap compared to prescription medications, and we assume that they are perfectly safe because they are so prevalent.

However, most of us probably wouldn’t consume these drugs (or give them to our kids) so readily if we were more aware of how they work in and even against our bodies.

Medical marijuana in Illinois may start selling next week

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - FOX 32 has learned that Illinois' first legal shipments of medical marijuana could depart from grow houses as soon as Friday.

The man in charge of the state's program told FOX 32 News that the first legal retail sales by dispensaries could come early next week, perhaps Monday. But a woman who worked tirelessly for years to legalize medical marijuana in Illinois is turning her back on the program.

Julie Falco has painful, incurable multiple sclerosis. Back when she could still walk, she was well known in the State Capitol as a tireless proponent of medical marijuana. But now with the program at the tipping point, she says she won't be part of it.

New England Cannabis Network brings medical marijuana event to Portland

This weekend, the region’s largest medical marijuana convention series makes its first sojourn north to Maine. The New England Cannabis Network will hold the two-day event at the University of Southern Maine, giving the public the opportunity to engage with medical marijuana dispensaries, doctors and caregivers, as well as more than 60 local and national cannabis industry businesses and retailers with products for sale.

A previously planned convention in Maine was pushed back due to scheduling troubles, according to Marc Shepard, co-founder of NECANN, but the success of earlier shows in Boston and Providence encouraged their push to have it here.

Watch: Medical marijuana is not "a joke"

When the new Drug Enforcement Administration chief took office, marijuana policy reformers hoped for someone a bit friendlier to their cause. But Chuck Rosenberg seems to be dashing those hopes: First, he struggled to admit that marijuana is a safer drug than heroin. And now, in his latest comments, he said it's "a joke" to consider marijuana medicine.
