Judge pondering cancer patient's plea for marijuana card

Linda Horan, diagnosed in July with late-stage lung cancer, says she may be dead before New Hampshire opens its first medical marijuana dispensaries early next year.

She wants a judge to order the state to grant her a medical marijuana identification card now so she can buy marijuana legally in Maine. But a judge on Thursday postponed a ruling on her request.

Horan didn't testify at the hearing, but she said later that she's frustrated and called it "nonsense" that the state doesn't have dispensaries up and running more than two years after the law legalizing medical marijuana was passed in 2013.

"A lot of people who would have benefited have since passed on," she said. "The clock is ticking on me. I don't have a lot of time."

Fulton Co. harvests first medical marijuana plants in NY

Vireo Health is on track to reach its January deadline to provide severely sick patients with medical marijuana.

On Thursday, Vireo Health harvested its first medical marijuana plants. The organization only had four and half months to get to this stage and start making medicine.

Inside a tropical 80 degree room with high pressure sodium lights acting as the sun helping to speed up the process, Vireo CEO Dr. Kyle Kingsley showed off the state’s first medical marijuana plants.

Meet the unlikely advocates for legal medical marijuana

When Moriah Barnhart’s 2-year-old daughter Dahlia was attacked by intense tremors, fever and nausea in May 2013, she rushed the girl to a Tampa emergency room. A week later, after surgery for an aggressive and cancerous brain tumor, Dahlia couldn’t eat, walk or talk.

Three weeks later, her left side partly paralyzed, Dahlia was moved to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis for experimental treatments. She soon stopped breathing, a device had to be implanted in her skull to drain excess fluid, and her chemotherapy drugs had spread sores throughout her mouth and gastrointestinal tract. Subsequent treatments caused nerve and brain damage, vomiting and weight loss.

Medical Marijuana And Florida Veterans

I received the following e-mail from the Florida medical marijuana campaign:

We talk to a lot of veterans in this campaign.  Some have come to us because of major injuries they sustained, and are supporting medical marijuana because of how it has alleviated pain.

Others – old and young – have PTSD from combat situations – and find that marijuana keeps their mind steady and reduces the number of incidents. (It should be noted that PTSD is one of the conditions explicitly mentioned in the petition.)

There are many ways to honor veterans, and these brave and hard working men and women unquestionably deserve our thanks. But our veterans – as much as anyone – also deserve treatment options for their conditions.

New Hampshire: Lung Cancer Patient Sues For Medical Marijuana Card

CONCORD, N.H. –  A New Hampshire woman with late-stage lung cancer filed a lawsuit against the state health commissioner Thursday in hopes of getting a medical marijuana identification card before dispensaries open.

Under a state law passed more than two years ago, people suffering from a limited number of diseases and medical conditions can purchase marijuana with approval from their doctors. The Department of Health and Human Services started accepting applications this week from patients and their caregivers, but identification cards won't be issued until the Alternative Treatment Centers get authorization to start dispensing marijuana.

Medical marijuana should be held to same standard as other drugs, UB pharmacist says

People are advocating for medical marijuana for ‘less than pure reasons,’ says Edward Bednarczyk

BUFFALO, N.Y. – When medical marijuana dispensaries in Oregon opened their doors to sell to anyone who is 21 years or older last month, the lines between recreation and medicine were officially blurred, said Edward Bednarczyk, PharmD, pharmacy practice chair in the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
