Medical marijuana debuts in Illinois but some patients turned away

Illinois' medical marijuana dispensaries opened their doors Monday and have begun processing patients who will receive the first batches of the drug under the state's four-year pilot programs.

At EarthMed, a dispensary in Addison, the first patient to legally purchase pot, Chris Favela, 19, emerged with a small, opaque canister of a strain called Grape God. He paid $180 for about nine grams of the marijuana.

"I think it's fantastic," Favela, of Itasca, said of the program. "It's going to help patients that are suffering. I take a lot of medication and if this reduces it … I'm a fan."

Favela hopes the drug will relieve muscle spasms he has as a result of multiple sclerosis.

Activist concerned Maritime marijuana tradition could lead to tobacco addictions

Nova Scotia activist doesn't want people to mix marijuana with tobacco if pot is legalized

With the expected legalization of pot, a Nova Scotia activist is concerned about a Maritime marijuana tradition spreading — smoking marijuana cigarettes cut with tobacco.

It's a practice Nova Scotia rapper Classified referenced in his song, The Maritimes.

"We always mix our tobacco with weed, it's the way we've always done it," Classified raps.

That song brings a smile to Chris Backer's face.

"For a lot of Maritimers financially, we have less money here. And a lot of people stretched [marijuana] out that way by mixing it with tobacco," said the vice-chair of Maritimers Unite for Medical Marijuana.

Watch a Former NFL Star's Powerful Testimonial in Defense of Medical Marijuana

Kyle Turley spent eight years as an offensive tackle in the NFL, which means he spent eight years standing in the way of oncoming traffic. The gig led to two diagnosed concussions and, Turley says, a estimated 100 that went undiagnosed during his tenure on the turf.

Now that he's retired, Turley is feeling the full force of those had injuries. And after years of trying to treat the symptoms with pharmaceuticals, he's discovered the one drug that works better than anything else: marijuana. On Thursday, Turley appeared on ESPN's "Highly Questionable" and described the difference smoking has made in his life.

Western Australia parents treating children with medicinal marijuana illegally

Up to 100 West Australian parents are illegally using cannabis to treat children living with epilepsy, the chief executive of an epilepsy organisation says.

Epilepsy Association of WA (EAWA) chief executive Suresh Rajan said medicinal marijuana was being used extensively on WA children.

"I would have anything up to 80 to 100 mums that I know of in Western Australia who use it [on their children]. Illegally, I will emphasise, because it is not legal yet in Western Australia," he said.

Campaigners said there was evidence that cannabidiol, one of the compounds in marijuana, can stop seizures and boost the quality of life of those with epilepsy.
