What now after legal weed?

Testing for impairment from cannabis is no “magic bullet”. Rather, effective oversight, worker supervision and having an impairment-management program are key to navigating the post-legal-weed world. This was the message that Tom Brocklehurst, director of prevention practices and quality with WorkSafeBC in Richmond, British Columbia, delivered during a session at the 2019 Western Conference on Safety in Vancouver.

“We are now six months after legalization. I don’t know if the sky has fallen — I don’t think it has,” Brocklehurst said. “Impairment has been around as long as there are impairing substances, and impaired workers have been around for as long as people have been working.”

Cannabis use could help prevent diabetes

A study published earlier this month shows data that identifies long term use of cannabis may prevent diabetes even after usage decreases or ends.

Researchers (Ngueta G. and Ndjaboue R.) from Laval University in Quebec analyzed data from the 2009-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and estimated the minimal lifetime marijuana use using the duration of regular exposure and the frequency of use.

Researchers used linear models to determine the association of marijuana use with both fasting insulin and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) for lean, overweight, and obese subjects.

Pregnant women’s medical cannabis and CBD intake on the rise: American Medical Association

According to a new statistical study featured in the American Medical Association’s online journal, there has been an increase in the number of pregnant women consuming cannabis as compared to previous years. The study shows that the number of women choosing to use cannabis during their gestation period between 2016 and 2017 increased by 7 %. This study’s results vary significantly with the results of a previous study conducted between 2002 and 2003. According to the previous study, which used the same parameters, only 3% of women during this period opted to use cannabis.

Rising rates of marijuana use among pregnant women spark concern

Increasing numbers of pregnant women are using marijuana in the U.S. and that may result in issues for their babies, two new studies suggest.

Researchers found that the proportion of U.S. women using pot during pregnancy more than doubled between 2002 and 2017, according to a report published in JAMA.

Legalization may at least partly explain why more women are using marijuana since many assume that means the drug is safe, said the U.S. study's lead author, Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. That attitude, coupled with the lack of studies on pot can lead to "magical thinking," Volkow said. "It's very appealing to think that a drug that makes us feel great could come with no ill effects."
