The women of weed

From soccer moms to marijuana mavens: the American women breaking the stoner image.

The stereotype of a wasted, layabout cannabis-smoker is a pervasive one in the UK. It was the same in the US until recently when a steady stream of women using the drug started to come out of the woodwork.

Despite being one of the 1.1 million Americans using cannabis for medical treatment in 2014, Cheryl Shuman said the stigma of lazy stoners and hot-boxed university bedsits still lingered. ‘When I first came out of the closet I was embarrassed. I didn’t want to be associated with the image that marijuana had. I was a soccer mom with two kids,’ she says.

Willie Nelson set to market marijuana in Colorado

Nelson: 'I never thought I’d see the day it would be legal'

BRIARCLIFF, Texas - Relaxing at his ranch outside of Austin, Texas, country music legend Willie Nelson discussed his plans to enter the marijuana market this fall.

Nelson said that he made the decision after the sale of recreational marijuana became legal in Colorado and Washington state in 2012.

“We’re setting up businesses there,” Nelson said, explaining that he hopes to have what he’ll call “Willie’s Reserve” available by September in Colorado.

“This product is some of the best they have to offer up there,” he said.

Nelson said that he understands that there will be plenty of competition.

Fast-growing US marijuana industry wrestles with pesticides and safety

DENVER — Microscopic bugs and mildew can destroy a marijuana operation faster than any police raid. And because the crop has been illegal for so long, neither growers nor scientists have any reliable research to help fight the infestations.

As legal marijuana moves from basements and backwoods to warehouses and commercial fields, the mold and spider mites that once ruined only a few plants at a time can now quickly create a multimillion-dollar crisis for growers. Some are turning to industrial-strength chemicals, raising concerns about safety.

Google removes medical marijuana app from Play store

Google has removed from its Play store an app that allowed California residents to purchase medical marijuana from growers.

Green Exchange had said Google approved its Loud Cannabis app and that the program had been available for months before getting pulled. The app allowed people who use marijuana for medical reasons to connect with growers and arrange to have the drug delivered to them.

Downloads of Loud Cannabis increased after the app received an award earlier this month, possibly leading Google to more closely examine the services offered, Green Exchange said Monday.
