Does Cannabis Need a Corporate Makeover?

By Alex Thiersch

This is a time of real change in the legal cannabis industry. Just in the last year we've made many business inroads and technological innovations that have stoked already red-hot growth. As fantastic and meteoric as the industry's ascension has been, though, we've only just started to develop its real potential. This potential includes the image rehabilitation that's occurring across the country, as well as attracting new demographics. As I will talk about at the Cannabis World Congress and Business Expo this week, in order to really capitalize on this opportunity there needs to be a corporate shift in our approach to the public.

Want to buy some weed? Advertising marijuana is harder than you might think

More states are legalizing recreational and medical marijuana, and that means a new industry is emerging. Unfortunately for companies doing business in this industry, it has been difficult to spread the word.

Because cannabis is illegal under federal law, state governments and online advertising platforms are placing strict rules on how companies can market their products. From imagery and pricing information restrictions to television bans, it is nearly impossible for companies to disseminate their message directly to mainstream consumers.

Lessons from a marijuana conference: stay in school and be nice to mom

Oregon’s cannabis industry is going overground. From 1 October, sellers will be allowed to sell to the all-new, all-legal recreational market.

At this year’s Oregon Medical Marijuana Business Conference (OMMBC) in Portland, attendees were anticipating a world of opportunity for growers, processors and retailers. The national medical market is worth over $3bn, and some project this number to grow tenfold as more states make medical or recreational pot legal.

But now that growing and selling marijuana has moved out of the shadows, how do entrepreneurs claim a share of all that growth? In talking to speakers and exhibitors, I managed to boil it down to a few simple rules.

City of Kimberley grants two more medical marijuana business licenses

In two separate votes, Kimberley City Council granted business licenses to two more medical marijuana businesses for Kimberley on Monday evening. Each business will be allowed to dispense medical cannabis products, but each with a limitation — there will be no production allowed. The businesses must source their product from growers elsewhere.

Council first heard an emotional plea from Chris and Lori Weitzel. Chris is battling esophagal cancer. He was diagnosed with stage 4 over a year ago and chose to go a different route than chemo and radiation. After a lot of research, Chris opted for traditional Chinese medicines, medical cannabis and a totally organic lifestyle. He also travelled to Mexico for treatment.

First Time Ever - A State Generates More Annual Tax Revenue From Marijuana Than From Alcohol

For the first time in history, a state has generated more annual revenue from taxes imposed on marijuana than from taxes imposed on alcohol. According to the Colorado Department of Revenue, the state collected nearly $70 million in marijuana-specific taxes and just under $42 million in alcohol-specific taxes from July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015.

The news comes as Colorado prepares for a “marijuana tax holiday” on Wednesday, during which the state is suspending marijuana-specific taxes for one day.

ISRAELI CANNABIS PRICES AND PACKAGING

Here are a few examples of how the flowers and pre rolls are packaged in the medical cannabis program. There are only 8 producers and their prices are set. It’s about $2 per gram. Patients pay about $100 per month regardless of the amount they need, whether it be 2 grams or 200 grams. This amount needed is determined by the prescribing doctor. There is no hand trimming. The high temperature and high humidity is rough on the volatile organic compounds. The flowers had very little nose and were generally spongy and moist. However, it was clear that they were potent and that the light intensity in production environments was quite high with all the the intense Middle East sun exposure.
