Ball State's NORML chapter meets every Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Whitinger Business Building.

Andrew Maternowski, a criminal defense attorney and a member of the National Organization for the Reformation of Marijuana Laws (NORML) legal committee, spoke on campus Sept. 17 about legal matters concerning marijuana.

Maternowski, an Indianapolis-based lawyer, said the most important thing for students interested in enacting change is to be aware of the laws surrounding marijuana usage.

"If you're going to [use marijuana], do it responsibly. What doesn't help the movement is doing stupid s—t," Maternowski said. "You can't be part of the fight when you're sitting in the county jail."

The Alaska Marijuana Control Board met Sept. 14 in Kotzebue and Sept. 16 in Anchorage to accept the next round of draft regulations, which are to be recommended to the Legislature and approved by Nov. 24. The board focused on marijuana cultivator regulations, one of the four designated marijuana business licenses included in regulations, along with manufacturers, retail stores, and testing facilities.

Three issues dominated discussion both in Kotzebue and in Anchorage: whether cultivator employees can consume cannabis on premises, limited cultivator operations, and product packaging.

Marijuana Sales Soon Legal In Oregon, And WA's Highest-Grossing Pot Shop Is Bracing For Competition

Two years ago, brothers Adam and Ramsey Hamide, both in their thirties, were self-employed online ticket brokers. Today they run Main Street Marijuana, the largest grossing marijuana retail store in the state of Washington, ringing up $3 million in sales last month. The store is located in Vancouver, near Washington’s border with Oregon and only 15 minutes from downtown Portland, so a large portion of the store’s customers come from Oregon where there have been no legal recreational marijuana sales.

Marijuana sparks changes to water business

The growth of the marijuana industry is sparking changes in the water business. Pueblo's Board of Water Works is making new rules to specifically address the influx of cannabis cultivators.

Grows keep popping up throughout the state, and in rural Pueblo County, many of them need to obtain water from somewhere else, like the Pueblo Board of Water Works. The board decided to make amendments before the demand becomes greater than the supply.

The Pueblo water dispensing station is a busy place. It is where customers who live outside city limits get their fill. Lately the lines have gotten longer and longer, held up by larger water haulers, some of which are delivering to marijuana growers.

GGS at the Oregon Medical Marijuana Business Conference

Here are a few snapshots of the highlights at the Oregon Medical Marijuana Business Conference in Portland last weekend.

There were a lot of information sessions, and a lot of people I met seem to be just starting to get into the business. In Oregon there are no limits on licenses and it appears to be fairly easy to get licensed in comparison to the crazy regulations in many of the other states. The challenge for cannabis growers in Oregon is that with only 3 million people, successful growers will need to be efficient and produce consistent top quality product. Professional growing environments will make the difference on profitability.

Colorado's $70m in marijuana taxes proves legalized pot is big business

It seems as though Colorado is rolling in the green, thanks to legalized marijuana.

The state is enjoying a steady flow of dough (and presumably cookie dough sales) since it made pot legal for recreational use in 2012 – though it wasn’t distributed commercially until 2014.

Reports now show it’s been a good move for Colorado, which has racked in $70 million in marijuana taxes between July 2014 and June 2015. That’s significantly more than what the state’s alcohol-specific taxes brought in during the same time period – $42 million.

On Wednesday, Colorado showed its appreciation for pot users by instating a day long “tax holiday,” where the substance in its many forms could be purchased tax-free.
