Growth Opportunities in the Canadian Marijuana Market

The Canadian marijuana market is expected to grow fast and based on our model, it is still well under-penetrated, leaving room for significant growth and potential new entrants (assuming their facilities can be financed). We have forecast the peak Canadian marijuana market size to be over $2.5-billion in 2020, assuming full legalization down the road (over $1.1-billion in 2020 without full legalization) - some of these sales are being cannibalized to the black market via dispensaries.

Marijuana Business Investing: The Basics On Debt vs. Equity

Many of my firm’s cannabis clients are raising money right now. Out-of-state investors looking for a place to deploy capital are looking hard at Oregon (which recently abolished residency requirements to participate in its cannabis industry), and some are already starting to lay the groundwork for pending recreational legalization in Nevada and California. Even more established markets, like Washington and Colorado, are seeing an uptick in corporate entities trying to bring in new money.

Washington: Marijuana Sales Top Spending on Wine and Milk in Spokane County

Legal marijuana sales in Spokane County topped retail sales of wine and kitchen staples such as bread and milk last year.

That’s according to sales numbers from the Washington Liquor and Cannabis Board and a survey of household expenses conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Not all marijuana sold in Spokane County is consumed by county residents. State law allows the 17 state-licensed pot shops in the area to sell to anyone older than 21, regardless of where they live.

But with monthly sales topping $5 million for the first time in March, retailers in the county are selling marijuana at an ever-quickening pace – on track to top receipts at area bookstores, museums and live music venues, according to figures released by the Washington Department of Revenue.

Competition Among New Jersey Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Causing Prices To Fall

New medical marijuana dispensaries in New Jersey are causing prices to fall as they compete with other dispensaries in the state.

The Philadelphia Inquirer says the state Health Department released a report last month saying the average price in 2015 was $489 an ounce. Advocates said that was among the highest in the nation.

But two dispensaries launched last fall have offered discounts and specials knocking that price down to the $300 range, as well as innovative products.

New Jersey has five dispensaries, but the amount of patients has fallen below expectations. Dispensary operators and patients say that’s due to strict state regulations that have made the program too expensive.
