Uruguay marijuana licences lure world bidders

South American country plans to issue as many as five permits to grow cannabis

MONTEVIDEO — Canadian medical-marijuana producer Tilray and the founder of a German cannabis products retailer are among 11 investors bidding for a foothold in a formerly illegal industry in Uruguay: marijuana farms.

Once the government issues the licences, pot could reach pharmacies in three to four months, said Alfredo Dupetit, a partner in Montevideo, Uruguay-based bidder Lucus SRL.

Pharmacies will then be able to sell as much as 40 grams (0.1 pound) of pot a month, enough for about 60 joints, to registered users, the government has said.

That’s a common piece of advice given to new investors that Calvin Broadus, Jr. (a.k.a. Snoop Dogg, a.k.a. Snoop Lion) seems to be taking to heart.

Sources tell us the prolific rapper, youth football coach and marijuana aficionado is putting together a fund specifically to invest in cannabis startups. According to one source, he hopes to raise $25 million to fund the nascent, but fast-growing legal marijuana industry. Because his agency is still in the process of raising the fund, its ultimate size is uncertain. Marijuana and Technology

Technology is beginning to affect every aspect of the cannabis marketplace, pushing it in unprecedented directions. As Tantalus Labs builds the first ground-up, legal, cannabis-tailored greenhouse in Canada, we can’t help notice others building ancillary services in the marketplace.
