CNN’s latest Original Series “High Profits” premieres on Sunday at 10pmET. CNN’s foray into the weed industry follows Brian Rogers and Caitlin McGuire as they attempt to become the first ever “moguls of marijuana.”

The eight-part series, produced by Bat Bridge Entertainment, will examine the booming industry that is legalized marijuana. We’ve seen in the past the marijuana-related programming does very well with viewers.

Back in January, ebbu LLC‘s Dooma Wendschuh was embarking on a journey to raise $9 million in venture capital funding. The money will fund research and development into cannabis products that Colorado-based ebbu plans to produce and sell.

Since announcing the opening of the capital raising, Wendschuh has spent much of his time on the road talking to potential investors. The exercise has involved late nights, early mornings, working holidays, more alcohol ingestion than he is used to and revisions to the business plan based on feedback from potential investors.

Millions of Americans rushed to finish their taxes in the hours just before the midnight deadline Wednesday. But for business-owners in the cannabis industry, a years-long tax battle is far from over.

Supporters of legal marijuana cited tax revenue as big factor in pushing through laws that have allowed medical marijuana sales in 23 states and recreational pot in four. But the businesses that grow and sell marijuana in those states are also staring at a steep federal tax bill, especially when compared with businesses in other industries.

For Deb McPherson, marijuana is medicine. But purchasing the drug is nothing like buying pain pills or picking up a blood pressure prescription at a local pharmacy.

"It's extremely difficult," said McPherson, 47, of New Castle. "You're asking around everyone you used to know in high school. You're hitting people up on social media."

Federal law may still prohibit its use and tech giants such as Google and Apple are still resisting its allure, but the market for marijuana in the United States is hot.

Entrepreneurs, private investors, academic researchers and, most importantly, voters all seem to share the same opinion – that legalisation in some form is likely across the country.

April is a significant month for marijuana enthusiasts and advocates. Along with the annual “420” celebrations on April 20th, more companies, institutional investors and cannabis fans are taking part in the legal marijuana industry as part of the traditional springtime ramp-up of business.

Organized crime in the European Union generates about 110 billion euros a year, corresponding to around 1 percent of the EU’s gross domestic product, a recent report commissioned by the European Commission found, with the bulk of that coming from the “traditional” market of illegal narcotics.

The report, titled “From Illegal Markets to Legitimate Businesses: The Portfolio of Organized Crime in Europe,” compiled by Project OCP – Organized Crime Portfolio, found that in Greece, organized crime generates just under 3.6 billion euros, corresponding to 1.6 percent of GDP (in 2010), significantly more than in Croatia (134 million euros; 0.3 pct/GDP) but also less than in Latvia, where 514 million euros of proceeds account for 2.8 percent of GDP.

Each time a new state legalizes marijuana, entrepreneurs jump in to fill niches that can play a part in cannabis growth or sales there. With new greenhouses and growing spaces come purchases of new grow-lights, an essential tool for a robust cannabis crop, and start-up lighting companies are responding to the need with innovative products.

Marijuana plants need a lot of light to thrive, which in turn can mean high electricity bills, and high heat in the greenhouse requiring more cooling.  Most indoor cannabis growers currently use High Intensity Discharge (HID) lights, but new companies developing alternative technologies are gunning for lower heat output, lower cost, and best light spectrum emission.

Over the past five years, I’ve had my fair share of experiences with both the good and the bad in the marijuana industry. As is the case in any industry, if something seems too good to be true, it usually is.
