"Uber for marijuana" startup raises $75m from Snoop Dogg and other investors

A marijuana delivery start-up has raised $10m (£6.8m) in a funding round which included investments from Snoop Dogg's Casa Verde Capital and Silicon Valley firm DCM Ventures among others.

Eaze, which has been dubbed the "Uber for weed", does not directly supply marijuana, but instead connects California medical marijuana card-carriers with local dispensaries, claiming it can hook users up with the drug in under 10 minutes. Technically, it is not breaking any law, even though recreational use of marijuana is still illegal.

The firm became the first marijuana startup to attract international investors when it raised $1.5m in November, and has made 3,000 deliveries since its launch.

'I am like every other merchant' downtown, says Guelph marijuana lounge proprietor

GUELPH—The owner of a new marijuana lounge in downtown Guelph says "the motivation for the idea is purely selfish."

"It is to have a place for myself and people like me, who have medical prescriptions, to hang out and smoke marijuana," said Anthony (Tony) Veder, owner of the DLR 420 Vapour Lounge on Macdonell Street. Veder made the comments in an interview just after the opening of the operation. He said he's been reluctant to talk to reporters about his latest venture but wanted to clarify his motives and quell any rumours.

Veder said he isn't a pot legalization crusader or looking for attention but is delighted with the response from neighbouring businesses and the wider community.

Manipulation of marijuana figures by former Dutch Justice Minister Opstelten exposed.

Manipulation of marijuana figures by former Dutch Justice Minister Opstelten exposed.

Why the Dutch cannabis industry lost it's head start to the US, Spain and Uruguay.

The Netherlands have been the example of how to handle the consumption and tolerated and regulated sales of cannabis for almost 40 years now, an example that enabled other countries, like Uruguay, Spain and the US to get out of the strangle hold of prohibition.

Without this example, and the people that stood and stand up for the Dutch cannabis tolerance system, serving as a decades running experiment for the world to see and experience, it would not have been possible for pre-mentioned countries to follow that example the way they did.

Are Banks Gouging Marijuana and Bitcoin Businesses?

Few banks are serving bitcoin and legal marijuana businesses because of their “cloudy regulatory status,” and those that do are charging hefty fees, according to an American Banker story.

Companies involved in the business of pot are reportedly paying as much as $3,000 a month for basic checking accounts, and bitcoin firms are paying fees that can range into the tens of thousands of dollars, American Banker said. In contrast, most small businesses typically pay $50 or less in monthly bank fees.

The marijuana industry’s newest customers are sick and elderly dogs

A day before a scheduled vet appointment to euthanize her dog, Wendy Mansfield decided to try one last resort to alleviate the chronic pain of her 15-year-old labrador mix: cookies from a marijuana dispensary made specifically for ailing dogs.

Kali, a mild-mannered 80-pound rescue, was never much of a complainer. But she often licked her paws—an obvious sign of pain, according to her vet—which was typically accompanied by bouts of coughing because of the shedding fur that got in her throat. One cookie and 20 minutes later, the licking suddenly stopped.

Guardians of the Greenery: Inside the Marijuana Security Business

Picture the kind of person who hauls the fruits of the marijuana trade from place to place. In times past, maybe it would have been a questionable character in an aging sedan, eyes peeled for any signs of undue attention from cops, grifters or mischievous teens. Nowadays, in yet another still-kinda-hard-to-believe byproduct of pot legalization, the task is increasingly falling to ex-law enforcement officers manning armored vehicles.

Congress told the Justice Department to stop fighting medical marijuana. It didn't work.

Charles Lynch was running a legal medical marijuana dispensary in California — but that didn't stop the feds from raiding his store in 2007, throwing him in jail, and later placing him on home arrest, rendering him unable to find work and, as a result, leading to the loss of his home.

"I have no work and no money," Lynch, 52, told the New York Times's Erik Eckholm, "and I'm depending on others to survive."
