Consolidating and cashing in on medical marijuana

Marijuana legalization is likely far off in New Mexico, but you wouldn’t know it from the way some businesses are acting.

Recent news of a Canadian company’s encroachment into Santa Fe spawned backlash from those critical of an out-of-state, out-of-country company attempting to get a piece of New Mexicos’ medical marijuana industry.

Last month, Toronto-based Nutritional High announced that it would be acquiring 51 percent of shares from and assuming management operations of Sacred Garden, a Santa Fe nonprofit medical marijuana producer that’s been operating for nearly five years.

The plan drew immediate backlash from patient advocates and others in the industry.

Yesterday (May 7), Victoria city council received a report from staff that recommended a crackdown on the provincial capital’s growing number of medicinal marijuana dispensaries.

DisposaBowls Crafting - Convenience for Consumers

Let’s face it: it is hard to be a cannabis consumer on the go. Federal prohibition makes it difficult to travel with your cannabis pipes; and even if it was legal on the federal level, would you trust your pipe with the TSA? Most people wouldn’t, and neither would Lauren Ely, CEO of disposaBowls.

DisposaBowls is a company based in Colorado that makes, you guessed it, disposable pipes for the cannabis consumer on the go. In its first iteration, the disposaBowl is a heavy cream colored pipe that bears a striking resemblance to a valve or gasket. On the front end of it is a child-safe cap that keeps your cannabis fresh and the tell tale smell out of your pockets, which is a huge plus for the discreet cannabis consumer.

Uruguay loosens medical cannabis rules, makes possible new hemp varieties

Uruguay made the headlines 17 month ago by being the first country to completely decriminalize marijuana use, a decision that was not without controversy and opposition – for example, the country’s pharmacies have refused to distribute the product. But that’s recreational cannabis; this report is about medical cannabis and here, again, Uruguay seems to be setting the pace: it was the first nation in the world to fully legalise the research and development, as well as cultivation, distribution, sale and consumption of non-synthetic cannabinoids and hemp.

Swimming in Shark-Infested Waters: Avoiding Entrepreneurial Scams

Are you an entrepreneur looking to get your startup funded? Be careful.

I suppose it’s no surprise that hopeful entrepreneurs are good targets. Too often we’re led to believe that getting investment money is the ultimate victory. Supposedly we’re all going to be successful as soon as some investor says “yes” and we get a big check. And that eagerness to get the money makes us vulnerable to sharks.

While you’re probably as alert as anybody to scams involving fake Nigerian royalty, or free weekends in resorts, your normal anti-scam radar can malfunction when you’re in startup mode looking to get financed. Keep your eyes open and stay safe.

Write a business plan. Don’t buy one.

Bid to legalize marijuana in Arizona has some advocates seeing red

Family propelled JP Holyoak into the weed business: his daughter, Reese, has a rare illness, and Holyoak believes in the power of medical marijuana.

He believes in it so much that his company, Arizona Natural Selections, operates two medical marijuana dispensaries that have served about 9,000 patients since opening last year. Holyoak, a financial adviser, has a big cannabis nursery in a warehouse on an industrial estate near Phoenix Sky Harbor airport. And he believes that recreational marijuana should be legalised – not through any enthusiasm for stoner culture, but because it is sound conservative policy.
