Judge denies request to freeze Santa Ana marijuana lottery winners; city can have 20 dispensaries

A judge on Friday denied a request to temporarily freeze the city of Santa Ana's efforts to approve the county's first legal medical marijuana stores, despite accusations that the process for choosing the winning dispensaries was unfair.

SANTA ANA - A judge on Friday denied a request to temporarily freeze the city of Santa Ana’s efforts to approve the county’s first legal medical marijuana stores, despite accusations that the process for choosing the winning dispensaries was unfair.

The decision by Orange County Superior Court Judge David R. Chaffee allows the city to move forward with approving licenses for 20 dispensaries that were chosen during a lottery earlier in the year.

3 Things You Must Know If You Want To Work In Marijuana Law

Earlier this week, Above the Law hosted a marijuana law reception in Denver, Colorado, at Legal Talk Network. The event was very well-attended — in fact, we hosted a standing-room only crowd. We couldn’t have been happier with how this event turned out. For a night of discussion with a rather serious intention, there were plenty of laughs and personal anecdotes shared with a more than attentive audience.

There has been a flurry of pot deals on the ASX

The company attempting to backdoor list cannabis play MGC Pharmaceuticals this morning announced it had entered into a $60 million offtake deal with European cosmetics company Natura Laboratories.

Erin Resources shares bounced 0.3 cents to 2.2 cents on the news, which will see MGC supply the pharmaceutical for a minimum supply of 300kg of resin per year for a four-year minimum term.

It claimed it is the first first ASX-related cannabis or hemp company to sign a wholesale cannabis supply contract

At Cannabis Trade Show, Vendors Tread a Careful Line

A question hung in the air at the Cannabis World Congress and Business Exposition at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan on Thursday: How do you show off your wares in a place where actually using them would be illegal?

The sales pitches were carefully honed.

“These are for tobacco only,” Raj Tiwary, a vice president for the vaping accessory maker Ultimate Vapor Source, said repeatedly, while demonstrating a line of pipes and pens. “Tobacco and dry herbs.”

Pot Bars in Denver?: Inside "Limited Social Marijuana Consumption Initiative"

Our coverage of 4/20 weekend raids at two Denver marijuana clubs highlights a continuing area of concern for cannabis activists: While locals and visitors can legally consume pot recreationally in Denver, they aren't allowed to do so in social settings outside private homes.

Now, Mason Tvert and attorney Brian Vicente, the two most prominent proponents of Amendment 64, the 2012 measure that made limited legal recreational marijuana sales legal in Colorado, are prepping a new Denver ordinance expected to be called "The Limited Social Marijuana Consumption Initiative."

Medical marijuana ruling on edibles boosts business

Last week’s ruling by the Supreme Court of Canada that legalized medicinal marijuana edibles boosted business for one local cannabis candy producer.

“As soon as it happened on Thursday [June 11], our phone started ringing off the hook from different dispensaries across Canada wanting to get our product into their stores,” said Michelle Sikora, who owns and operates S&M Medicinal Sweet Shoppe with her husband Doug out of their home in Selma Park.

“People are asking us, ‘How much can we get and how fast?’”

The Sikoras have been making and selling organic marijuana edibles, teas, tinctures, lotions and oils for two years through a mail-order process that, until now, they say, has operated “in a grey zone” pending the outcome of the Supreme Court case.

Oregon Medical marijuana dispensaries ask legislators for lifeline to recreational pot market

SALEM-Medical marijuana dispensary owners pleaded Thursday with legislators to allow them to sell to recreational pot users once the drug becomes legal on July 1.

"We don't know a single dispensary doing well in this over-saturated market," said Meghan Walstatter, who along with her husband Matt owns a dispensary in Northeast Portland.

She called early sales of recreational marijuana a "much-needed lifeline" for the dispensaries.

The Oregon Health Authority has approved licenses for 310 dispensaries and another 93 are pending, according to a June 12 tally

Weston, Raiser at odds over Marijuana ruling

John Weston is not pleased with the medical marijuana ruling by the Supreme Court of Canada last week.

The ruling, which came down June 11, means medical marijuana patients will be able to use edible marijuana and other extracts and derivatives, in addition to being able to smoke it.

“It is unfortunate that judges feel they can displace Health Canada as our health regulator and decide what drugs are medicines,” said Weston, Member of Parliament for West Vancouver–Sunshine Coast–Sea to Sky Country.

“Never before in Canadian history has a drug become a medicine just because judges said so.”

Weston said the ruling also sends a misleading message about the potential dangers of marijuana.
