Cannabis Researchers Are Sick Of Uncle Sam’s Weak Weed

Cannabis researchers in the United States are forced to conduct their studies using weed grown by the federal government. And many of them have said that Uncle Sam isn’t giving them what they need. If a scientist in the U.S. wants to do an official study of cannabis the only way to legally get the weed they need is to get it from the federal government’s supply.

Since 1968 the U.S. government has contracted with the University of Mississippi to grow for cannabis researchers.

Don't All Rush at Once, but This Legal Cannabis Startup Is Hiring Tech Staff

OK. So it’s not a tester job, duh, but Confident Cannabis is looking for front and backend developers in San Francisco and this is actually a chance to be part of a pretty cool social experiment, as much as being close to the green stuff.

As legislators across the world, most notably in the US, are taking another look at whether prohibition of weed has ever really made economic or social sense, Silicon Valley startups are doing what they do best – working out how to grab a piece of this growing market.

Marijuana Tracking Chips Introduced to Oregon

Last year, Oregon made a monumental move towards ending cannabis prohibition by becoming the fourth state to legalize marijuana production and sales for recreational adult use.

Currently, adults are able purchase recreational marijuana from a store but all cannabis on the market is currently produced and processed under Oregon’s medical marijuana system. On April 29, the transition from medical grows to recreational grows will begin as the state releases production licenses under the more regulated and transparent recreational laws.

Canada: with legalization looming, hopes for breakthrough on marijuana breathalyzers

Companies developing breathalyzers to detect marijuana's main psychoactive ingredient in suspected cannabis-impaired drivers appear to be entering a crowded field as Canada prepares to legalize pot.

Health Minister Jane Philpott announced Wednesday at a special United Nations session on drugs that legislation to begin the process of legalizing and regulating pot will be introduced next spring.

A University of British Columbia engineering professor is the latest to create a breathalyzer she says can detect THC levels in the breath of someone who has smoked pot.

Earth Day 2016: five inspiring facts and how to do your bit

On Friday, leaders from 160 countries will officially sign the Paris Climate Agreement on Earth Day 2016.

The deal was thrashed out in Paris last December in order to stem global warming.

The signing makes this year's Earth Day one of the most important in years, and the organisers will be attempting to build on the momentum created by last year's Paris Climate Summit.

To mark the day, Google has designed a Doodle, one of many that it creates year after year.

Pearlfisher creates conceptual medical marijuana brand Allay

Pearlfisher has created a conceptual medical marijuana brand named Allay in conjuction with Surface Magazine.

The American design, architecture, and fashion magazine approached Pearlfisher with an open-ended brief to develop a theoretical brand that imagines the future of marijuana.

While the agency initially had doubts around the idea, it decided that given consumer adoption of medical marijuana in the US for health benefits it decided to charge ahead and developed a conceptual challenger brand that is designed to provide relief from chronic stress, anxiety and pain by harnessing the alleviating power of the marijuana root.

UBC professor develops marijuana breathalyzer

As the federal government prepares to unveil its marijuana legislation next spring, a researcher at the University of British Columbia has successfully created a breathalyzer test capable of measuring THC levels.

Engineering professor Mina Hoorfar began work on the project in 2013 with the help of PhD student Mohammad Paknahad.

Traditional drug tests rely on blood or saliva samples, which take time and are impractical in a roadside setting.

But Hoorfar’s breathalyzer can detect tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient in marijuana, using only the subject’s breath.

Canada: Secrets of a mass marijuana producer: 'Fort Knox' security and fish droppings

You'd never know it standing at the side of the road, but nestled in the rolling hills of Flamborough is an underground bunker capable of producing more than 2,700 kilograms of medical marijuana per year.

At the end of February, Green Relief Inc. became Canada's 28th licensed producer of dried marijuana under the Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR). The company says it's also the largest aquaponics commercial grow facility in North America.

Just off a main concession, a bumpy dirt road winds past a weathered barn and crosses over a babbling brook. The view might lead one to expect to find an historic farmhouse or field of crops as they crest the final hill up the laneway.

A New Crop of Marijuana Geneticists Sets Out to Build Better Weed

THE MARIJUANA ANALYTICS company Steep Hill doesn’t smell dank, or skunky, or “loud”—unless you happen to arrive when a client is dropping off a sample. No seven-pointed-leaf logos ornament the walls; no Tibetan prayer flags flutter from the doorframe. Inside, a half-dozen young scientists work in a glass-walled lab to the sounds of whirring ventilation and soft jazz. The effect is one of professionalism and scientific objectivity.

Start-Up Plans 3-D Visualizations of Pot Strains, Using Genetic Data

Think of it as the consumer buying guide of the future.

On Wednesday, Phylos Bioscience, an Oregon biotechnology start-up, will begin offering an online interactive guide that visually portrays the genetic relationships of almost 1,000 types of cannabis, otherwise known as marijuana.

The resulting visualization will offer anyone the ability to easily travel in cyberspace through a three-dimensional projection of the genetic information drawn from sequencing samples of the plant, which is increasingly being legalized for medical and recreational use in states throughout the country.
