Which Country Will Legalize Cannabis Next?

It may be hard to pinpoint the exact time when cannabis will be legalized worldwide, but it’s a safe bet that eventually, most, if not all of the planet, will end cannabis prohibition.

In theory, there could always be a limited amount of countries that stay on the wrong side of history for a very long time. However, most countries will presumably legalize at some point.

Cannabis prohibition is a failed public policy wherever it exists, and that, combined with the economic benefits of a vibrant cannabis industry, is going to influence lawmakers around the globe to step up and end prohibition in their jurisdictions.

How Canada’s legalization is shaping cannabis laws elsewhere

Ever since Canada became the first major country to legalize marijuana for adults a year ago, other nations have been paying attention.

The small South American nation of Uruguay was the first to legalize marijuana for adults. New Zealand, Luxembourg and Mexico are among those that have looked to Canada for guidance or lessons, while Russia has chastised it for its “barefaced” flouting of international anti-drug treaties.

Here’s a look at how Canada’s experiment is playing out internationally and where the next attempts at legalization are coming:

Canadian pharmaceutical Khiron promotes cannabis medical use in Mexico

Khiron life Science, a Canadian integrated agro-pharmaceutical cannabis production company that manages its core operations in Colombia, announced on May 30 that it is strategically positioned to penetrate the medical cannabis market in Mexico by being the main sponsor of the CannaMéxico World Summit.

This conference, which is taking place on Wednesday, May 30 and Thursday, May 31 at the San Cristobal Center in Guanajuato, Mexico, is led by former Mexican President Vicente Fox Quesada, an ardent supporter of cannabis for medical use as an alternative treatment method for a wide range of medical conditions.

How Big Pharma forces us to buy drugs instead of cannabis

Simply put, Big Pharma has been a long time opponent of legalizing medical marijuana as it threatens to ruin its business and drop the market cap for pharmaceutical drug companies.

Even though medical cannabis has been legalized in more than half of the US states, all of Canada and in Mexico, prices of drugs that could be replaced by cannabis are still on the rise.

Worse yet, prices of drugs that are made from the cannabis flower are being artificially inflated in places where medical marijuana is legal, but most recently in Germany of all places.

This is due to the fact that the Big Pharma has so far only competed with the black market when it comes to marijuana, but now all of that is starting to change.

Mexico Joins Canada In Making Cannabis Legal, Leaving the US Far Behind in Marijuana Policy

Our neighbors to the north and south see the war on drugs as a failure and legal cannabis as an opportunity.

Just like that, Mexico joined Canada this month in making medical marijuana legal nationwide. And the Canadian Parliament is considering making adult-use marijuana legal across the nation by mid-2018.

All of this could potentially put legal marijuana businesses in the United States far behind their neighbors to the north and south.

Marijuana remains an illegal drug at the federal level in the United States, although 29 states and the District of Columbia have made medical marijuana legal. Another eight states, as well as the district, have made adult-use marijuana legal.

Mexico's Legalization of Medical Marijuana Yields Opportunities

Mexico's Lower House of Congress recently passed a bill that legalizes the use of medical marijuana and scientific research. In particular, the bill classifies the controversial psychoactive component of marijuana -- tetrahydrocannabinol or THC -- as "therapeutic". The move is akin to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) rescheduling marijuana to a controlled substance that has therapeutic value for patients.

"The ruling eliminates the prohibition and criminalization of acts related to the medicinal use of marijuana and its scientific research, and those relating to the production and distribution of the plant for these purposes," read a Congressional statement.
