'Grandma's magic remedy:' Mexico's medical marijuana secret

When her legs ache, this Mexican grandmother rubs them with marijuana-infused alcohol. She is well aware the homemade remedy defies the country's cannabis ban, but her family has used the concoction to treat ailments since she was a child, handing it down the generations.

"I really have a lot of faith in it," said the slender 53-year-old, a housewife and amateur dancer who spoke to AFP about her cannabis use on condition of strict anonymity.

"When I'm very tired, I spread it on my legs, feet and body. It's really good. I can go without salt but not without marijuana with alcohol. My grandmother used it," she said, holding a plastic bottle filled with the leaves and liquid.

Mexico To Hold A Series Of Regional Marijuana Debates

When it comes to drug cartels, Mexico is usually the first country that people think of. That’s not to say that there aren’t cartels in other countries, because there absolutely are, but Mexico serves as a type of ‘funnel’ through which a lot of the drugs that end up in America passes through. Cartels are horrible, and have killed many lives in Mexico and beyond. Those that haven’t been killed often live in fear of what may happen to them at the hands of the cartels.

Mexico to Open Debate on Use of Marijuana

MEXICO CITY — Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto came out strongly against legalizing marijuana on Wednesday, the same day his government announced a national public debate on the issue.

He suggested the recent, informal debate on the issue has already created confusion, even among his own children. Mexico's Supreme Court ruled in November that growing, possessing and smoking marijuana for recreation is legal under the right to freedom, but that ruling applied only to the four people involved in the case.

Pena Nieto said Wednesday that one of his own kids asked him "Hey Dad, does that mean I can light up a joint in front of you soon?"

The president said: "No, don't be confused."

Mexico inches toward legalizing marijuana

The United States has a very sensitive relationship with Mexico pertaining to illegal drugs.

It is constantly claiming that Mexico has been lax in assisting in the interdiction of illegal drugs that are produced or staged in Mexico and shipped to destinations within the U.S. American policymakers and would-be presidential candidates point to the corruption within the Mexican government that is fueled by the billions in revenues of illegal drugs that Mexico’s cartels send to the U.S.

Mexico always responds with the obvious: There would be no illegal drug problem between the two countries if U.S. drug users were not creating this lucrative market.
