LAKE MARY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) - You are now more likely to encounter a drugged driver on the roads than a drunk driver, according to a recently released study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
 
That statistic, combined with efforts to legalize medical and recreational marijuana, has law enforcement across the country looking for new and better ways to crack down on drugged driving.
 
Their newest tool could come in the form of a marijuana breathalyzer.

As the fight for cannabis legalization, medical or otherwise, rages on in the U.S., Florida remains one of the most heated battlefields. Apparently, however, some people are not waiting for the law to catch up with their entrepreneurial spirits.

You may recall last year that we voters here in Oregon passed statewide marijuana legalization. We're one of the 26 states with some form of citizen lawmaking ability, so we crafted a marijuana legalization initiative, got it on the ballot, and passed it with a 56 percent majority.

The initiative legalized personal marijuana possession and growing and established a system for commercial production, processing, and sales. Much of what was in the initiative was copied-and-pasted from our state's liquor laws, including two key provisions: only a vote of the people in a city or county could ban commercial marijuana licenses and only the state can tax marijuana.

Indiana’s First Church of Cannabis plans to host its inaugural worship service July 1, the same day the state’s controversial religious freedom law takes effect. If all goes according to plan, the service will offer a bold test of the law’s ban on government burdens on the exercise of religion.

Adherents of the recently established church worship cannabis, which is illegal to grow, use or possess under state law.

The first service, church founder Bill Levin says, will open with “Amazing Grace” played on harmonica by a popular young musician and move to a quick sermon and short member testimonies about positive things that happened in the past week.

CHICAGO -- Illinois has turned over 13,000 pages of documents to attorneys challenging how the state awarded one medical-marijuana business license, marking the first release of such material.

While the records remain closed to journalists and the general public, the disclosure represents a win for attorneys representing a disappointed applicant and might eventually shed light on a secretive process. The case is one of several similar lawsuits being closely watched by the new marijuana industry.

“When we want to raise capital,” Dooma Wendschuh, the thirty-eight-year-old co-founder of a cannabis company called ebbu, said, “I go up to someone and say, ‘Would you like to invest in my company? Here’s how it will work. One: you may go to prison for making this investment. Two: I may go to prison, and you might lose all your money. Three: our minimum investment is two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Sure you want to play ball?’ ”

A leading drug policy reform group has created a satirical ad seeking a new Drug Enforcement Administration chief that skewers the DEA in the wake of scandals and the announcement that its current administrator plans to resign.

The ad, which was produced by Drug Policy Alliance and is slated to appear in Wednesday's edition of congressional newspaper Roll Call, lists the new DEA chief's primary responsibilities -- including mass incarceration, police state tactics, obstruction of science, subverting democracy and undermining human rights.

-demand transportation company SideCar has partnered with Meadow, a “full-service cannabis concierge,” to do medical marijuana deliveries for patients in the Bay Area, the two San Francisco start-ups announced Tuesday.Under the arrangement, when medical marijuana card-holding patients order cannabis from one of Meadow’s partner dispensaries, some of the deliveries will now be made by SideCar drivers.

Meadow CEO David Hua said the partnership offers dispensaries a turnkey delivery system, allowing them to leverage SideCar’s technology and network of drivers instead of investing in their own delivery services.
