As the Ontario government opens up its cannabis retail market, Meta Growth Corp. (TSXV: META) says it’s gearing up for rapid expansion.

The Toronto-based pot retailer announced Monday that it received approval from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario for a general cannabis retail licence.

The new licence gives Meta Growth a chance to dramatically increase its Ontario retail footprint beyond the one store it currently operates in downtown Toronto.

Prices of hundreds of cannabis products at Ontario’s provincially owned online retail store have decreased dramatically since legalization, a result of rising cannabis supply and a proliferation of product offerings from producers.

“To date, more than 200 product price decreases have been made on dried cannabis, pre-rolls, oils and capsules as well as accessories,” the Ontario Cannabis Store revealed in a statement this week.

According to the OCS, more than 160 price drops came in the dried flower category and approximately 40 in the extract category, which includes products such as cannabis oils and gel capsules

Well over a year after cannabis legalization took effect in Canada, Waterloo, Ont. region’s first licensed cannabis store is finally open for business.

There may be a host of ways to consume cannabis, from edibles to vape pens. But for two thirds of Canadians, smoking is still the most popular. An Ontario man wants to switch to medical cannabis from prescription opioids — he has been taking cannabis for pain management over the past two decades. But the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) will have nothing to do with it and has denied his application.

The man, known as Al, started consuming prescription opioids to manage pain caused by a serious workplace accident that left him disabled and in constant pain that refuses to go away even after eight surgeries.

Ontario launched a consultation process Monday to solicit input about potentially permitting cannabis consumption in lounges, outdoor festivals and concerts across the province.

The provincial government said it is collecting feedback now to explore future policies that could result in a more open cannabis market, although no changes to existing legislation are expected and there is no timeline provided on when a decision could be made. Any new legislation tabled by the Ontario government is also expected to leave smoke-free laws intact, meaning that there would be no public indoor smoking or vaping permitted in the province.

From Feb. 10 to March 10, 2020, the province is inviting feedback from the public about cannabis consumption establishments and special occasion permits. The community consultations could inform how and where you can consume pot socially.
