CEN Biotech, a company that soared to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars last year on claims that it was being licensed to build the world’s largest medical marijuana facility in Canada, is under investigation by the Ontario Securities Commission.

The regulator said Wednesday it is looking into the company and its parent firm, but did not provide further details, such as how long the investigation has been going on or if regulators in the United States are involved.

“The OSC has an active investigation into this matter,” Carolyn Shaw-Rimmington, spokeswoman for the OSC, said in an e-mail to The Globe and Mail.

TORONTO – Supermarkets in Ontario may finally be allowed to sell beer and wine to its customers in the near future, according to a report in the Toronto Star.

The newspaper cites sources saying the Liberal government is eager at loosening the quasi-monopoly held by the Beer Store and in turn offer hundreds of Ontario supermarkets the ability to stock their shelves with alcohol.

Sources tell the Star the move will likely be announced in the upcoming spring budget.

Mississauga hopes to become one of the first municipalities in Canada to pass specific bylaws governing medical marijuana grow-ops.

City council is set to vote Wednesday on legislation that would require grow-ops to follow certain regulations in terms of odour and safety and be regularly inspected. Currently, the federal government dictates where grow-ops can set up and what features the facilities need.

The medical marijuana industry is worth billions and is expected to grow dramatically in the coming years.

Mississauga Coun. Ron Starr said the goal is get some control over grow-ops and make them blend into the community better.

"If you have one of these beside you in an industrial building you'll not even know it’s there," Starr said.

Jonathan Zaid, a 22 year old third year student at the University of Waterloo, has recently begun making waves in the Canadian cannabis world by announcing he was able to get his medical marijuana costs covered by his studentmedical insurance plan.

Mississauga is set to become the first city in Canada to licence and regulate the production of medical marijuana.

“The federal government legalized these operations, but we’re the ones eventually responsible for where they’re located and the enforcement of them,” said Councillor Jim Tovey, after a committee vote on a new bylaw that passed Wednesday. Final approval will is expected to come when from full council by the end of March.

A staff report dated Feb. 18, 2015, indicated that no other city in Canada has made such a move, following the federal government’s transition in 2013 and 2014 to licence the private production of legal medical marihuana.

“It’s really a public safety issue,” Tovey said.
