UBC study exposes labelling of marijuana strains

Not to harsh your mellow, but a new study suggests that labelling of marijuana, even by medical growers, is frequently inaccurate.

Dr. Jonathan Page of UBC's Department of Botany says users who seek out specific strains for medical or other reasons will often find their weed is not as advertised.

"Those classifications are actually quite inaccurate. The plants that were reported to be sativa were often not genetically sativa, and vice versa with indica as well," he said.

Dr. Page studied the DNA of 81 strains of marijuana from a medical grower in Ontario when he found the dubious labelling, suggesting this problem goes beyond illegal growers.

Booze in supermarkets unfair to those with alcohol issues

The sale of booze in supermarkets is a nice idea of you like a drink; it’s hell on those who have trouble with their drinking.

The newspapers unfurl on the kitchen table every morning, and for an hour I am an old-school general of the news, absorbing fresh troop movements and daily atrocities.

It is early and I am not done with coffee, nor have I eaten an orange or an egg, when the LCBO ad insert falls out of the paper, and I suddenly feel the need for clear gin in bottles blue or green, and a pale cold glass of pilsner, and rye whiskey splashed over crystal cubes of ice and, yes, a delicate glass of wine as dark as blood.

It is not yet 8:00 a.m.

Natural pest control business gets boost from medical cannabis industry

TORONTO – When Sarah Stuive first got into the natural pest control business – which uses predatory insects, or “good bugs,” to weed out pests – she never expected to be working with cannabis plants.

But thanks to Health Canada regulations that limit the use of chemical pesticides on medical marijuana in order to make sure the plants are safe for consumption, the biological control specialist says she’s seeing an uptick in business.

“I have seen a lot of growth in demand since the start of the cannabis industry,” said Stuive, who works for Global Horticultural and also provides her services to vegetable farmers and plant growers. “It’s a new alternative to chemicals.”
