A Camden County father will be honored by freeholders Thursday for advocating on his daughter’s behalf.

Ricardo Rivera has been a vocal supporter of medical marijuana and has called on political leaders to make it easier for patients to obtain legal cannabis.

His 8-year-old daughter, Tatyana “Tuffy” Rivera, was diagnosed at 10 months of age with a severe form of epilepsy called Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Until she started taking a regimen of cannabis-infused coconut oil more than a year ago, she suffered up to 300 seizures a day and was unable to speak or feed herself.

Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez said she wrote the official proclamation about Rivera in time for Father’s Day. In it, the document states Rivera “helps his daughter daily by being her voice.”

Colorado's Supreme Court has decided that workers who use marijuana for medical reasons can be fired.

Patients in New Jersey's medical marijuana program are also at risk of losing their jobs.

Ken Wolski, who leads the Coalition for Medical Marijuana in New Jersey, said Colorado's decision is consistent with court rulings in other states holding that medical marijuana users can be fired for using the drug when they're off the job. That's not fair, said Wolski.

With New York State beginning to accept applications for medical marijuana providers last week, criticism of the hyper-strict program negotiated by Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been plentiful. On Sunday, New Jersey governor Chris Christie set out his stall firmly against legalised cannabis on CBS’s Face The Nation, vowing to clamp down using federal law on states such as Washington, Colorado, Oregon and Alaska that have legalised the drug.

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie vowed Sunday to eliminate legalized marijuana in states like Colorado and Washington if he's elected president.

The governor, speaking on CBS' "Face the Nation," said his administration would use federal rules that outlaw marijuana to clamp down on states that legalized recreational pot use.

"Yes sir," Christie told host John Dickerson when asked whether he'd go after Colorado and Washington.

"If you were president would you return the federal prosecutions in the states of Colorado, Washington states?" Dickerson asked.

"Yes," Christie said.

"So, if somebody's enjoying that now in their state, if you're president, that's getting turned off?" Dickerson continued.

TRENTON — As a New Jersey family wages a court battle to get permission for their daughter to consume edible medical marijuana in school, Colorado this week became the first state in the nation to legalize on-campus cannabis use.

Inspired by the plight of Jack Splitt, a Lakewood, Colo. teenager who relies on a ventilator and wheelchair, Colorado legislators approved a bill that allows students who are registered medical marijuana patients to use edible cannabis products in school, so long as they are administered by a parent or an approved caregiver. Gov. John Hickenlooper signed the bill into law Monday, calling it "a pretty good reflection of what the community wants."

Losing a child is the worst nightmare any parent could imagine, a nightmare that is much harder to bear when you know that there may have been something you could have done to prevent such an awful tragedy. As unimaginable as this scenario is for most parents, preventable deaths are happening at an alarming rate as politicians argue about whether or not marijuana is medicine (we did some checking, it is). At this crucial time in history, a moment when the science on medical marijuana has become crystal clear, our government leaders can no longer afford to move slowly on reform measures. The lives of our children depend on this.

TRENTON — The parents of a 16-year-old girl with epilepsy and autism are suing for her right to consume homemade cannabis oil at school because it has shown to control her seizures.

A huge spike in hospitalizations last month caused by a class of drugs often called “synthetic marijuana” illustrates the potency and dangers of the chemicals used to make them and the shifty tactics authorities believe manufacturers are using to evade regulation.

Poison control centers around the US reported 359 cases in January of illnesses from synthetic cannabinoids, which mimic the effects of the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana but can be far more potent. There were 273 in February and 269 in March. But the number skyrocketed to just over 1,500 in April, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers.
