New Hampshire Starts Issuing Medical Marijuana ID Cards

On Monday, New Hampshire began issuing the ID cards for qualifying patients to buy medicinal marijuana, ABC affiliate station WMUR-9 reported. Though the state Legislature legalized medicinal cannabis in 2013, ID card holders in the Granite State have been waiting to legally buy medical marijuana, and will continue waiting until springtime — when New Hampshire's first dispensaries are expected to open.

Marijuana Legalization In New Hampshire: Medical Cards Issued Ahead Of Dispensary Openings ...

Residents of New Hampshire hoping to overcome the nausea that may be induced by some presidential campaigns that have made the Granite State their second home in the run up to the 2016 primaries can now receive their medical marijuana identification cards, though they’ll still have to wait until the spring to buy pot in the state. Patients there will be able to cross borders with their cards to purchase medical marijuana in nearby states like Maine and bring the pot back home after a woman with terminal cancer sued the state for access to her card.

New Hampshire begins issuing medical marijuana cards

New Hampshire patients who qualify for medical marijuana can now receive the identification cards needed to legally purchase and possess cannabis, though dispensaries won't begin operating until spring.

The decision to begin issuing cards on Monday comes after a woman with terminal cancer sued the state for access to an identification card so she could buy marijuana in Maine. She won the case, prompting the attorney general to advise the state to give out cards before the dispensaries open.

The cards will allow qualifying patients to legally possess up to two ounces of marijuana, meaning they could buy it in other states without fear of facing charges.

The Legislature approved medical marijuana in 2013.

Terminally Ill NH Woman Picks Up Medical Marijuana in Maine

PORTLAND, Maine — A terminally ill New Hampshire woman who won a court's permission to get a medical marijuana card received her medication in Maine Friday.

New Hampshire passed a law that allows patients with certain conditions to use medical marijuana, but no dispensaries have opened yet. Supporters of medical marijuana say the case is an important step toward increasing access and giving terminal patients more options for end of life care.

Linda Horan, 64, was beaming Friday afternoon at the Wellness Connection of Maine's Portland dispensary. She had just picked up some cannabis tinctures, capsules and cookies to help treat symptoms associated with her lung cancer.

"My god, I'm over the moon," she says. "Completely over the moon."

Judge allows New Hampshire woman to buy medical marijuana in Maine

CONCORD, N.H. — A woman with late-stage lung cancer can seek to buy medical marijuana in Maine before dispensaries open in New Hampshire, a judge ruled Tuesday.

New Hampshire lawmakers approved the use of marijuana by people suffering from a limited number of diseases and medical conditions more than two years ago, but the first four dispensaries won’t open until next year. Linda Horan, 64, says she might be dead by then and sued the state in hopes of getting an identification card that would allow her to purchase marijuana in Maine instead.

Judge Orders DHHS to Issue Medical Marijuana ID Card to Horan

On Tuesday, a Merrimack County Superior Court Judge ordered the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to issue a medical marijuana ID card to a woman with terminal cancer in order to expedite her access to medical marijuana.

Linda Horan of Alstead filed a lawsuit against DHHS Commissioner Nicholas Toumpas earlier this month, asking the agency to immediately issue her a medical marijuana ID card so that she can begin obtaining medical marijuana legally in Maine and using it without fear of arrest in New Hampshire.

Judge pondering cancer patient's plea for marijuana card

Linda Horan, diagnosed in July with late-stage lung cancer, says she may be dead before New Hampshire opens its first medical marijuana dispensaries early next year.

She wants a judge to order the state to grant her a medical marijuana identification card now so she can buy marijuana legally in Maine. But a judge on Thursday postponed a ruling on her request.

Horan didn't testify at the hearing, but she said later that she's frustrated and called it "nonsense" that the state doesn't have dispensaries up and running more than two years after the law legalizing medical marijuana was passed in 2013.

"A lot of people who would have benefited have since passed on," she said. "The clock is ticking on me. I don't have a lot of time."

CONCORD, N.H. –  A New Hampshire woman with late-stage lung cancer filed a lawsuit against the state health commissioner Thursday in hopes of getting a medical marijuana identification card before dispensaries open.

Under a state law passed more than two years ago, people suffering from a limited number of diseases and medical conditions can purchase marijuana with approval from their doctors. The Department of Health and Human Services started accepting applications this week from patients and their caregivers, but identification cards won't be issued until the Alternative Treatment Centers get authorization to start dispensing marijuana.
