Behind the scenes of a Las Vegas marijuana testing lab

The space is no bigger than a good-sized office break room. On beige counters along the walls and on an island in the center sit off-white rectangular boxes that could be copiers or printers.

But the several hundred thousand dollars of highly sensitive scientific equipment in this room — and others like it — will be key to ensuring medical marijuana sold in Nevada is safe.

A private, state-licensed laboratory like DigiPath must test each batch of marijuana before it is sold to the public — or sold to producers who make edible products. The labs also will have to test each batch of marijuana-infused “edibles,” such as lollipops or cookies, before they are sold.

The state approved 17 labs in Nevada, 15 in Clark County and two in Sparks.

How five women bet it all to sell medical marijuana in Las Vegas

Understand that Las Vegas is not the town it claims to be.

If you’re an adult in Las Vegas, you can do almost anything. On the strip, you can smoke, drink, and gamble. Drive an hour in one direction, and you can fire heavy weapons, legally. Drive an hour in another direction, and you can pay for sex, legally. But if what helps you relax is a prescribed dose of medicinal marijuana, you’re out of luck.

Nevada Senate Passes Limited Industrial Marijuana Farming Bill

Nevada senators have approved a measure allowing for colleges or the state agriculture department to grow industrial hemp.

Lawmakers voted unanimously on Monday to approve Senate Bill 305. The bill now moves to the Assembly.

Democratic Sen. Tick Segerblom is sponsoring the measure, which would allow governmental bodies to cultivate industrial hemp for agricultural or research purposes.

The bill was amended to remove language allowing private growers to cultivate hemp. The state agriculture department cautioned in a fiscal note that Nevada's climate isn't ideal for growing hemp and that the original bill could run into federal regulatory hurdles.

Dead MMJ Bill in Nevada Holds Lesson for Industry

A bill in Nevada aimed at adjusting the state’s medical marijuana program has died a quite death in the legislature. The bill had been held up in committee and the time limit expired before the Committee on Health and Human Services could give it a hearing.

If passed, the bill would have made it possible to transfer marijuana business licenses, make the licensing process more transparent, and make it easier for marijuana businesses to change locations. Although reasonable in scope, the bill never gained traction in the legislature, leaving outside observers to ask why.

To the Bitter End: The 9 States Where Marijuana Will Be Legalized Last

We know the end is coming, but pot prohibition is going to have to be undone state by state. Here are the ones least likely to jump on the bandwagon.

Marijuana prohibition in the US is dying, but it isn't going to vanish in one fell swoop. Even if Congress were to repeal federal pot prohibition, state laws criminalizing the plant and its users would still be in effect—at least in some states.

And it's probably a pretty safe bet that Congress isn’t going to act until a good number of states, maybe more than half, have already legalized it. That process is already underway and is likely to gather real momentum by the time election day 2016 is over.

The marijuana industry’s newest customers are sick and elderly dogs

A day before a scheduled vet appointment to euthanize her dog, Wendy Mansfield decided to try one last resort to alleviate the chronic pain of her 15-year-old labrador mix: cookies from a marijuana dispensary made specifically for ailing dogs.

Kali, a mild-mannered 80-pound rescue, was never much of a complainer. But she often licked her paws—an obvious sign of pain, according to her vet—which was typically accompanied by bouts of coughing because of the shedding fur that got in her throat. One cookie and 20 minutes later, the licking suddenly stopped.
