Nevada's new DUI marijuana testing is improvement but still poses concerns

The state of Nevada is poised to mandate the use blood tests and eliminate urine tests in DUI convictions for marijuana.

Although Washoe County already uses blood tests for pot, the state Senate this week gave the final vote of approval for the testing change for the entire state. Now, this measure only needs the final ‘John Hancock’ from Gov. Brian Sandoval to become law.

The final Senate vote floor vote comes less than two months before the July 1 starting date for sales of legal marijuana for “recreation” across Nevada for everyone 21 and over.

Final Hurdle Cleared for Nevada to Begin Recreational Marijuana Sales

An early start to recreational marijuana sales in Nevada cleared the final state hurdle Monday, paving the way for the program to roll out in under two months.

The Nevada Tax Commission adopted temporary regulations proposed by the Department of Taxation that will allow the state to issue recreational marijuana licenses by July 1. Most of the regulations were copied from the state’s medical marijuana program.

Nevada Dept. of Taxation reveals preliminary regulations for recreational marijuana

Recreational marijuana has been legal to use in Nevada for four months now, but there's still nowhere for adults to legally buy pot.

Nevada's first recreational marijuana dispensaries are expected to open on July 1, but questions remain about what regulations those business will be subject to. Lawmakers met with Director of the Nevada Department of Taxation Deonne Contine on Wednesday night to gain some clarity.

She said, "The department has drafted proposed temporary regulations to allow for Early Start."

The Early Start program will allow current medical marijuana businesses to be the first to participate in the recreational pot industry.

Two Months out from Recreational Marijuana Sales — Is Nevada Ready for the Green Rush?

Recreational marijuana sales are just two months away with sales set to begin on July 1.

The legal and heavily taxed sales of pot are expected to bring tens of millions of dollars into the state by the end of the year.

So, Nevada … are you ready for the green rush?

Jason Sturtsman thinks so. He’s a cannabis advocate we met in a North Las Vegas production plant which creates cannabis vape pens.

“Some dispensaries may very well stay medical but in Colorado, recreation is about 80-percent of the market,” said Sturtsman.

Sturtsman is confident early retail pot sales are on track for a July 1 launch.

Recreational marijuana sales considered in Utah-Nevada border towns

The neon lights of the casinos beckon you across the border for a little weekend fun.

Located right on the state line, this town of about 5,000 balloons to about 20,000 on weekends. People, mostly from Utah, arrive to drink, gamble or take in a concert. Now, city leaders are looking at another potential income source: marijuana.

"I have reservations, but I think it would be a good asset to the city for number one, revenue, and, for those that need it, medical marijuana," West Wendover City Councilman Jerry Anderson told FOX 13.

City of Reno backs off recreational marijuana moratorium

The Reno City Council shut down a proposal for a six-month moratorium on recreational marijuana establishments on Wednesday.

Several industry leaders representing local medical marijuana establishments appeared at the council meeting to talk council members down from pursuing a moratorium as the state approaches its own summer deadline to begin an early start recreational marijuana program.

"Neither the city of Sparks nor Washoe County have passed moratoriums, which means folks may head over to Sparks and (other dispensaries in) Washoe County for marijuana," said Joey Gilbert, a co-owner of Mynt Dispensary in downtown Reno.

American High: State-by-State Guide to Legal Pot

While Congress has largely refused to roll back, or even debate, the federal prohibition on pot, local voters across the U.S. have cast ballots to end the war on marijuana. But the nation's patchwork of pot laws can be confusing – even in the states where it's allowed – so here's a blueprint of what you can and can't do in the eight states (plus D.C.) where weed's been legalized for recreational use.
