President Obama has publicly stated he will not do anything about cannabis legalization for the rest of his presidency. It was frustrating news to hear for parents who are fighting for their children's lives. The only candidate running for president at this point who could possibly do the right thing and reschedule marijuana is Bernie Sanders.

If any of the other candidates win the general election it'll mean four more years of frustration.

Support expanding for Iowa medical marijuana legislation

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Some Republican House lawmakers are supporting legislation that would create a system for manufacturing, distributing and possessing some forms of medical marijuana in Iowa, though it’s unclear what type of support the bill will get from party leaders.

The bill would expand the state’s current law on medical marijuana, which allows some epilepsy patients to use cannabis oil. The new legislation would expand it to include more products and patients, though it would prohibit the smoking of medical marijuana.

With Rand Paul ending his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination, the GOP race has lost its strongest supporter of drug policy reform. But the remaining Republican candidates are for the most part not as retrograde in this area as you might expect, especially on the question of how the federal government should respond to state legalization of marijuana.

As support toward the legalization of marijuana for both medical and recreational uses rises, questions about the history and legitimacy of its prohibition are being brought to light. Though cannabis has been used by humans for almost 5,000 years, the past 80 years of its existence have been filled with controversy, crime and misinformation. Yet, the underlying intent behind the prohibition of cannabis — though hidden behind the guise of public safety — holds racist, xenophobic and disingenuous sentiments. As these intents become more integrated into public knowledge, the general attitudes — at least of Americans — toward cannabis have changed drastically.

After months (years?) of campaigning in one of the more unique political seasons in modern American history, the Iowa caucus results are in. Republican Ted Cruz won a solid electoral victory while Marco Rubio won the political victory.

A district court issued a permanent injunction Friday prohibiting Iowa State University administrators from using trademark policy to stop a campus group from printing university-themed T-shirts that depict a marijuana leaf.

In a 45-page ruling, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa permanently barred ISU from enforcing the university's trademark licensing policies in a discriminatory manner against the campus chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. The court specifically blocked ISU "from further prohibiting plaintiffs from producing licensed apparel on the basis that their designs include the image of a similar cannabis leaf."

DES MOINES, Iowa — A federal judge ruled Friday that Iowa State University administrators violated the constitutional free speech rights of student members of a pro-marijuana group by barring them from using the university logos on T-shirts.

U.S. District Judge James Gritzner issued an order granting members of the ISU chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws a permanent injunction which means university administrators cannot use a trademark policy to prevent the organization from printing shirts depicting a marijuana leaf.

ANAMOSA, Iowa — Marijuana was the hot button topic Thursday night in Anamosa.

The Jones County Safe and Healthy Youth Coalition organized a forum called “Marijuana — Let’s Talk.”

It was a forum meant to inform people, and elected officials from both parties took part.

While the event focused a lot on marijuana, other substance-related issues surfaced surrounding alcohol use as well.

A senator, two representatives, the sheriff and two county supervisors took on the questions.

They discussed recreational marijuana and marijuana used by people for medical reasons.

During the forum a legislator and the sheriff said they’re seeing marijuana coming into the state from Colorado where it’s legal.

DUBUQUE — A couple dozen people, who support the legalization of marijuana, lined Locust Street Friday, hoping to send a message to lawmakers in Des Moines.

Carla Kaufman said, “I just want to point out the hypocrisy of cannabis being a schedule one drug. They also have a patent for it to be medicine. I don’t know how that can coexist. “

Last year, some Iowa legislators tried to legalize medicinal cannabis use, but that bill didn’t pass.

Iowa law says people can possess and use cannabis oil to treat epilepsy. But production and transportation of the oil is not legal in the state.

On Friday, some supporters said making cannabis oil legal to access in Iowa is the top priority.

Leaders of the Omaha Tribe in Nebraska are considering land in western Iowa for growing marijuana.

The Sioux City Journal newspaper reports tribal members approved three referendums Tuesday giving the Tribal Council the authority to legalize marijuana for medicinal and recreational use and to grow plants for industrial hemp.

Tribal Chairman Vernon Miller says a study will examine whether the business would make financial sense.

Miller says leaders will watch the performance of the Flandreau Santee Sioux's marijuana resort on its South Dakota reservation.

Miller says it's unclear whether the Omaha Tribe's casino, Blackbird Bend, could become a similar resort.

Miller says the tribe will ensure its efforts wouldn't violate federal or state laws.
