Canadians 'overwhemingly' believe locally grown cannabis is the best. But B.C.'s reputation is intact

British Columbia is still perceived as the top spot for quality pot, according to new survey results collected by Maru/Blue and commissioned by Auxly Cannabis Group — but local love for homegrown weed is emerging among consumers, too.

The survey results were released to celebrate the launch of Robinsons Cannabis (an eponymous label by Kentville, Nova Scotia-based master grower Andrew Robinson), which is now available at the NSLC and Ontario cannabis stores. The survey was completed on June 16 and asked just over 1,500 “randomly selected Canadians” about their geographical preferences for the origins of their cannabis.

More Canadian firms than ever are seeking creditor protection

A record number of Canada’s largest businesses are seeking protection from creditors, a testament to the strains companies are under because of the coronavirus pandemic.

In the three months through June, 27 firms were granted protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act, a federal law that gives insolvent corporations that have debt of more than $5 million an opportunity to restructure and avoid liquidation. That’s the most in any quarter since 2009, which is as far back as the data are available, according to the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy.

May and June saw 10 and 12 orders granting protection, respectively, under the CCAA. The average since 2009 is three a month. Previously, the highest monthly total was nine, in December 2011.

Legalisation of cannabis in Canada deemed a success

A highly regarded British think-tank focused on reforming drug laws thinks Canada’s legalisation and regulation of cannabis has gone well.

Transform Drug Policy Foundation has been monitoring Canadian reform efforts for some time, and advised the Canadian Government and some provinces on how to develop regulations prior to legalisation. Its positive views of Canada’s initiatives is a significant contribution in assessing our journey away from criminalisation of simple possession and use of recreational drugs.

There have been a number of efforts at assessing our first year of legalisation and beyond. Not all of them have been as positive as Transform’s evaluations.

Based on the monthly revenue numbers that are reported by Health Canada, consumers are purchasing considerably more cannabis from legal operators in 2020 when compared to 2019. Although the size of the Canadian cannabis market has more than doubled in less than one-year, public cannabis companies have been under considerable pressure and this is a trend that our readers need to be aware of.

British think tank declares Canada's cannabis legalization a 'modest success' — but has suggestions for improvement

Canada’s federal legalization of cannabis is a success – at least, according to a British think tank.

Prominent UK drug policy think tank Transform, which has been observing Canadian cannabis reform efforts with great interest since the country legalized the drug for adult use in October 2018. The organization has now compiled a comprehensive report on Canadian legalization.

“Legal regulation in Canada is still a relatively new project, but an extremely important one,” reads the report’s executive summary. “With the eyes of the world watching, the legal market has seen modest successes and is providing a valuable case study for regulators seeking to reduce the harm caused by drugs and drug markets.”
