Canada: Illicit pot still dominates after two legal years

It’s been nearly two years since Canada became the first G20 country to legalize cannabis for recreational purposes. However, the majority of customers are still getting their pot from the illicit market -- with a lot of ground left to cover.

In the fourth quarter of 2018, legal marijuana represented only 21 per cent of total consumption in Canada, despite weed becoming lawful on Oct. 17 of that year. Fast-forward to the first quarter of 2020 and cannabis is now a $2.2 billion retail industry, yet legal consumption is still just 46 per cent of the total, according to data from Statistics Canada.

That’s not office furniture. Border patrol finds a half-ton of weed hidden in truck from Canada

The manifest of a truck travelling into the U.S. from Canada was a little light on details, opting not to list the 1,114 pounds (505 kg) of weed the vehicle had onboard.

Despite the “oversight”, staff with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) examined the vehicle and managed to find the cannabis contained in vacuum-sealed packages hidden in cardboard boxes and loaded onto wooden pallets within the truck.

From pot to shrooms: What's next for decriminalization?

Are shrooms the new cannabis in Canada?

In the U.S., the Washington D.C. Board of Elections is allowing an initiative to decriminalize psychedelic plants, including “magic mushrooms,” to appear on November’s ballot, after supporters gathered more than 25,000 signatures, according to the Washington Post.

If approved, the U.S. capital would join Denver, Oakland, Calif., and Santa Cruz, Calif., which have decriminalized psychedelics.

But, not so fast, says Canada’s federal government.

Pot-infused drinks hopeful for heyday in U.S.

Canopy Growth Corp.’s plan to launch cannabis-infused drinks in the U.S. marks the latest attempt by a marijuana company to position itself for a possible weed beverage boom.

The Ontario-based company has licensed rights to its cannabis drinks line in the U.S. to Acreage Holdings Inc., which is expected to soon provide more details. The move comes at an opportune time -- the pot industry is hopeful for U.S. legalization as soon as 2021 and Americans are drinking less alcohol during the coronavirus pandemic.
