Manitoba premier says government liquor stores best place to sell marijuana

Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger says government liquor stores are the best place to sell marijuana if and when the federal government legalizes the drug.

Selinger says Manitoba Liquor Mart outlets have staff that are well-trained on the potential risks of alcohol, and he suggests they would be in the same position to provide advice about marijuana.

He says there would be no requirement for workers to consume the drug.

Selinger adds there would probably be some private involvement too.

Liquor is sold in private outlets in some rural Manitoba areas where there is no government store, and Selinger says he expects that model could be used for marijuana as well.

CAMH studying the effect of marijuana on driving ... by getting people high

Scientists at CAMH are getting people high, and then putting them behind the wheel -- of a driving simulator.

If Justin Trudeau's Liberal government legalizes marijuana in Canada, research by drug experts at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto may play a role in how it's enforced.

For the last two years, scientists Robert Mann and Gina Stoduto have been giving test subjects a joint, putting them behind the wheel of a driving simulator, and recording what happens under controlled conditions.

"The number one drug found in dead and injured drivers after alcohol is cannabis," Mann said. "Teenage drivers in high school are now more likely to drive after cannabis use than they are after drinking."

Canada's newest medical marijuana producer blossoms in Brant County

A former chicken processing plant in Paris has a new lease on life.

After a $10-million renovation, the facility is now home to Kindcann – Canada’s newest licensed producer of medical marijuana.

Unlike illegal grow-ops, it wasn’t a matter of finding some quiet space and planting some crops.

Health Canada requires growers to meet strict regulations for security.

As a result, the Kindcann plant has a controlled-access security system, perimeter fencing, and nearly 40 surveillance cameras.

CEO Maxim Zavet says he understand why the government mandates such strict security measures.

“They want to make sure that the product’s not being diverted from the facilities and ending up on the street,” he said.
